Purple jellyfish on the beaches of Attica: What should we do if we get stung

The Region’s informational campaign for the protection and treatment of stings is ongoing purple jellyfishin all the coastal Municipalities of Attica with the presence of the regional mayor Giorgos Patoulis today in the Municipality of Palaios Faliros, who was accompanied by the deputy regional governors of the Southern Sector D. Nanos and Health G. Kehris, as well as the deputy mayor of Civil Protection N. Yakovlef.

Volunteers have distributed information brochures with clear instructions for protection and dealing with bites in areas where cases have been reported, specifically in the following: Alimos, Elliniko, Glyfada, Voula-Vari-Varkiza, Ag. Marina-Koropi, Lagonisi, Saronida, Anavyssos, Palaia Fokaia, Porto Rafti, Vravrona, Artemis-Loutsa, Rafina, N. Makri, Marathon. By Friday (July 22) 220,000 leaflets are expected to have been distributed.

Mr. Patoulis he thanked the volunteers and in his statements underlined that the Region remains next to the citizen, with the priority of protecting his health. He noted that “known is power” and recommended “This summer let’s swim carefully, in order to better protect ourselves”.

Detailed care steps in case of a bite:

1. Wash carefully with sea water, without rubbing the area of ​​the bite

2. If available, apply a mixture of seawater and baking soda (in a 1:1 ratio) for two minutes to stop any additional venom secretion from possible tentacle cell debris left on the skin

3. We use a plastic bank card or similar (not our hands) to remove the baking soda mixture, as well as any residue from our skin

4. Apply ice to the bite for 5-15 minutes. Ice, or even an iced soft drink, should be in a bag or other cover, such as a cloth or t-shirt

5. Check if the pain has subsided, and if necessary apply ice again for another 5-15 minutes

6. If the pain persists, consult a doctor or pharmacist to prescribe painkillers or anti-inflammatory creams

7. MHN wrap the bite tightly with bandages, DO NOT use vinegar, NOR fresh water, NOR alcohol, NOR ammonia.
