The image of the fire that started yesterday afternoon in Penteli is heartbreaking, with the fire brigade fighting a great battle, while they are fighting very strong winds, the intensity of which unfortunately does not seem to be decreasing this morning.
According to meteorologist Christina Souzi, the intensity of the winds will reach up to 9 Beaufort in the morning.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has been at the Unified Operations and Crisis Management Coordination Center of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection since 05:30.
At the first light of day the aerial vehicles will start dropping water again.
The flames started at 17.19 on Tuesday afternoon between in Dow Pentelis and Drafi.
So far the areas have been evacuated Penteli, Draft, I was blooming, Dioni, Dasamari, the Observatory and Children’s Hospital.
There is damage to houses and property, particularly in Drafi, as the front passed through the settlement.
Speaking on SKAI radio, the mayor of Rafina-Pikermio, Evangelos Bournous he pointed out that at least 2 or 3 houses in Drafi have been burnt.
He noted that the fire is raging out of control and the picture is not good. However, there is no problem for the residents, as the area has been evacuated. Mr. Burnous made it known, in fact, that another fire broke out in the evening in Nea Makri, which was quickly contained by the fire brigade.
This morning a 112 message was sent to everyone in the Pallini and in New Pallini to evacuate immediately to Pikermi – Rafina.
Specifically, the message states: “If you are in Pallini and Nea Pallini, evacuate now to Pikermi – Rafina. Forest fire in your area. Follow the instructions of the authorities. Self-protection instructions: https://www.civilprotection.gr/el/dasikes-pyrkagies.
At 4:30 in the morning, “112” sent a message to all those in Voula Pikermiou and Panorama Pallini to evacuate immediately to Pikermi.
Specifically, the message states: “If you are in Voula Pikermiou and Panorama Pallini, evacuate now to Pikermi. Forest fire in your area. Follow the instructions of the authorities. Self-protection instructions: https://www.civilprotection.gr/el/dasikes-pyrkagies.
The forces at the fronts
420 firefighters with an 18-person pedestrian section and 85 vehicles are working on the fire, which extends almost throughout the Penteli massif. Firefighters from Romania are added to the force.
They help 200 police officers from various agencies, while during the night 29 security patrols with 82 police officers were made available to provide all necessary assistance and patrol the areas that were evacuated.
According to EKAV:
- An evacuation took place from “Ariti” Supported Living Residences (Pendelis and Tyrnavou, Gerakas), it housed 46 people. Transportation of 6 people with a stretcher + 3 people with a chair. The 3 people were transferred to the Thalpi nursing home (Agios Stefanos) and 6 people were transferred to the Red Cross.
- Evacuation from the Center for Special Persons “Hara” (Pogoniou 2, Pallini Attica), housed 57 people. Transportation of one (1) person to Hippocrates.
- Evacuation from “Efestia” Elderly Care Unit (Eth. Antistaseos 80, Gerakas), accommodating 44 people. Transport of 10 people -2 in Red Cross + 2 in Hippocrates and in progress the remaining 6, 5 Red Cross, 4 Thalpi
- Ambulance transports, after calling 166 (until 05:45): 3 Firefighters with respiratory & injuries were transported to 251 GNA, 5 citizens were transported 1 to Gennimatas with slight burns, 3 Red Cross and 1 Rescue with respiratory problems
Traffic diversions

At Marathon Avenue on the stream towards Nea Makri, at the Cross of Agia Paraskevi, on Spaton Avenue, and on Evrytania and Cyprus streets on the stream towards Athens.
- It is closed Attiki Odos from the Kifisia junction to the Anthousa junction on the way to the Airport and from the 20 Markopoulos – Koropio junction to the Anthousa junction on the way to Elefsina.
- Vehicular traffic has been stopped on Anapausesos and Klisthenos towards Penteli
At around midnight, the fire was heading towards the ridge of Penteli, however there are also scattered outbreaks between houses, with the hiking units fighting to contain them. At the first light of the day the aerial vehicles will rise immediately to narrow the fronts even more.
A woman with a child was trapped in a house and was rescued by volunteer firefighters
