“There were dozens of cases where citizens did not want to leave their homes. They wanted to stay there themselves to try to save them,” the Minister of Citizen Protection said, among other things, to the SKAI 100.3 radio station.
In the coordinated, immediate and effective mobilization of the entire state apparatus, to deal with the fire that broke out yesterday in the area of Penteli, it was mentioned the Minister of Citizen Protection Takis Theodorikakosin an interview he gave to radio station SKAI 100.3.
Answering the journalists’ questions Noti Papadopoulos and Vassilis Chiotis, Mr. Theodorikakos pointed out that police officers selflessly freed over 680 citizens, some of whom refused to move from their homes despite the great danger to their lives: “There were dozens of cases where citizens did not want to leave their homes their. They wanted to stay there themselves to try to save them. Simply, we must all always have in practice as the first value the protection of human life. If a human life is lost, it cannot be rebuilt, houses are rebuilt”, the Minister emphasized and added: “During the night, in the early hours of the morning, talking with the Chief of the Greek Police, General Mr. Skoumas and with our crews, I could see how their work is dangerous. Self-sacrificingly, they had to open houses in some cases and in others even forcefully remove people who were in danger. Because the orders were clear, that above all is the protection of human life”.
As Mr. Theodorikakos pointed out, all the police forces that were made available remain on full alert and are patrolling the fronts of the fire to guard the areas that were evacuated, but also the properties of the residents from possible looting: “The State is here to to help. More than 630 police officers with 230 vehicles were mobilized in this battle with the fire, with the mission of contributing to the evacuation of the areas, traffic regulation. Something else which is extremely important and which of course will continue today and tomorrow and for as many days as necessary, is the protection of the property of the citizens who have left their homes from possible looting, which various vigilantes could seek to they do”.
The Minister of Citizen Protection emphasized that the cooperation of all involved bodies was done with absolute coordination, adding that in such situations there is no room for party games: “I would like to underline that in an extremely difficult situation like the one that developed yesterday afternoon, in a unfortunately a very difficult area and with an extremely bad and dangerous weather, with wind intensities that sometimes exceeded 9 Beaufort, there was an immediate mobilization by the Fire Service, Civil Protection, the Police, all the forces, the Local Government , the volunteers. I believe it is worth noting this, not to say something positive because we are a government, but because all together I think as a society and as a state we are slowly conquering a better level of dealing with natural disasters. A concerted and important work was done, which is good for everyone to finally recognize and not get into party games.”
