On the cruise ship “DIAMED PRINCESS” a doctor is sought for urgent pre-hospital health care to treat an incident. He will need to utilize clinical and other skills, in an environment with limited equipment and available time, and solve …puzzles in order to respond to the situation and “escape”.
The above could be a movie script, but this is the script of an escape room for medical students, health professionals and paramedics, set up as part of the recent Aristotle Medical Forum 2022, offering a unique entertainment and learning experience .
The escape room was developed within the funded research project ESCAPE4HEALTH (https://escape4health.eu/) with co-creation processes and methodology involving academics, clinicians and students, enabling healthcare professionals to leverage skills and knowledge they have taught in the past, facilitating the training of students in the acquisition of new knowledge and helping faculty to identify opportunities and inadequacies of the Medical curriculum.
A pioneer in the promotion of innovative practices in education, Panagiotis Bamidis, professor of Medical Physics and Informatics in Medical Education at the Laboratory of Medical Physics and Digital Innovation of AUTH, explains to the Athens/Macedonian News Agency how he and his colleagues created the first escape room in Greek universities for medical education and in fact multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary.
“We develop scenarios to educate people, making such rooms, equipping them with structures either using preforms and utilizing different technological things or for basic life support. We also have the scenario of the room, where riddles, riddles have to be solved, while we also put in augmented or virtual reality, so someone needs to use their mobile phone to see things that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Thus the physical world is enhanced with digital augments and we also have some exercises to solve which require some more enhanced digital skills“, he explains Mr. Bamidisscientific manager of the Escape for Health program (coordinated by the University of Valencia) but also coordinator of a similar program, Clued Up.
“In order to go to the next step, someone will have to solve the riddle, solve the riddle and depending on the knowledge they have, we will see if they can be “freed”“, adds the professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the AUTH, explaining that it was decided to implement the escape room as it attracts the attention and interest of the trainee.
At the same time, notes Mr. Bamidis, “we also want to build an entirely virtual world for these things to run, that is, in addition to the physical room, there should also be a completely virtual escape room, which will help us when we cannot train up close or in a room with many people in these pandemic situations we are experiencing».
The Laboratory of Medical Physics and Digital Innovation of the Faculty of Medicine of the AUTH, led by Mr. Bamidis, innovates, with programs and projects like the one above, which do not exist in any other academic institution in Greece. From the next academic year, the escape roomswhich are now in a trial stage, will be introduced in a more systematic way into the educational process.
It is noted that the program was presented to the presidents of all medical schools in Greece.
