The retired wingman breathed his last at the age of 88
Dimitris Apostolakis, the former Deputy Minister of Defense and MP for Heraklion of PASOK, Dimitris Apostolakis, a retired wingman, died today at the age of 88. He had been hospitalized in an Athens hospital for the last few weeks due to health problems.
Dimitrios Apostolakis was the leader of GEA, MP of PASOK, president of the Public Oil Company and Deputy Minister of National Defense. He had a close friendship and collaborated with Andreas Papandreou. With his own assistance in the early 90s, the famous “deal of the century”, as it was called, was agreed, which included the supply of 40 F-16s from the US and as many Mirage-2000s from France.
Dimitris Apostolakis was born in 1934 in Heraklion, Crete. He graduated from the then Aviation School (today’s Ikaron School) with the rank of second lieutenant in 1957.
He was also a graduate of the Air Force Academy, the Army General Staff Intelligence School, the F-84F Mobile Training Unit, the Air-Ground Operations Training Center, the NATO Gunnery School in West Germany, the Army School of Physical Training in the United Kingdom, the F/RF-84F Cockpit-Trainer School, the “B” Flying Trainer School, the T-33A & T-37 Trainer School, the Royal Institute of Defense Studies, London and the graduate department of the Higher Commercial School in Business Administration, while he has attended Political Science courses at the European Department of the University of Maryland in the USA.
He served as commander of the 116th Fighter Wing, director of the A1 Division of the GEA, director of the 1st Branch of the GEA, chief of staff of the 28th Tactical Air Force Headquarters, commander of the 30th Air Materiel Command and chief of the Tactical Air Force.
In 1973 he participated in the Navy Movement and disaffected from the dictatorship.
He was head of GEA from 18 December 1984 to 22 December 1986.
After his discharge from the army, he became involved in politics and served as a Member of Parliament for Heraklion with PASOK between 1990-1993 and 1996-2004, while from September 1996 to October 2001 he served as Deputy Minister of National Defence.
From 1993 to 1996 he was the president of the Public Oil Company.
