“Flight security is links links links and if one breaks we have deaths” characteristically says Phaedon Karaiosisfidis, shipbuilder and plane crash investigator talking to about the tragic helicopter crash in Spata where a young man lost his life.
The causes and circumstances under which the horrific accident took place are under investigation, however the first question that the authorities are asked to answer is whether all safety rules were followed during the landing and disembarkation of passengers.
A remote investigation cannot be done, says Mr. Karaiosisfidis, who gives his own assessment of what went wrong and this tragic outcome.
Disembarking and boarding a helicopter is never done when the propeller is rotating, he states, while if for any reason there is a need to do this, it is done with the absolute responsibility and instructions of the ground staff and of course the pilot who has the final responsibility for the flight.
“There are clear rules that no one approaches the helicopter in the rear. Over there there is a compensating rotor which rotates and which when it rotates at high speed is not a circle to see but also at low speed it is not clearly visible”. On the question of what could have caused a young man to be dismembered, the experienced plane crash investigator is unequivocal. “They came out without custody. From the evidence we have at the moment I can’t think of anything else. If the rules were followed, the helicopter should have stopped its rotors, then the passengers should have exited and headed towards the front of the helicopter. You always approach from the front, the back is deadly. What probably happened is that this unfortunate passenger entered the danger zone.”
In closing, Mr. Karaiosisfidis sounds the alarm as, as he says, the market for services offered by helicopter companies has “opened up” a lot in recent months mainly due to the increase in tourism and under no circumstances should the safety rules be relaxed.
