Gov.gr Wallet: The platform is also open for TINs in 5 – How is the process done

The process through questions and answers

1. What is a digital ID and a digital driver’s license?
The new digital copies of the identity card and driver’s license, which are a main part of the Gov.gr Wallet application, according to article 80 of Law 4954/2022, are digital documents fully equivalent to paper documents, for any legal use within of the Greek territory. They are not international travel documents.

2. When is the Gov.gr Wallet application available?
The Gov.gr Wallet application is available from July 27, 2022. Access and use of the application will be possible in parts according to the last digit of the citizen’s tax identification number starting on July 27 from number 1.

3. Is an Internet connection required to use the application?
When using the application, such as creating digital copies of an identity card or driver’s license as well as during the verification of a digital document, an Internet connection is necessary.

4. Why do I need to activate the ability to receive notifications on my mobile phone from Gov.gr Wallet?
The notification function (Push Notifications) is necessary for the proper functioning of the application, because through it you receive the consent requests in case of checking a digital document of yours or in case of a request to sign a document through docs.gov.gr.

5. How do I save digital documents on my mobile phone?
Once you have identified yourself in the application via TaxisNet codes or web banking codes and confirmed your mobile phone number with the relevant OTP SMS, you can create and save the relevant documents simply and quickly: by clicking on each document, enter immediately after the relevant confirmation code which you will receive via OTP SMS.

In case you revoke the digital document (ie delete it), you can repeat the process of creating the digital document again.

On iOS devices, you can also save the documents in the device / OS Wallet.

6. Who and how will be able to check the authenticity of digital certificates?
The digital identity card and the digital driver’s license are fully equivalent in terms of their validity to the physical documents in accordance with article 80 of Law 4954/2022, therefore, any auditor entitled to check your physical documents can also check and verify digital.

The validity of the document is checked by showing the QR code of the respective document to the inspector. After the controller “scans” your QR code with his own device, you will have to give (or not) approval for this control through the Gov.gr Wallet application. Once you give approval, a 6-digit code will be displayed which you can quote or show to your controller. Only – and only then – when the controller successfully enters this code, will they be able to see your digital ID card or driver’s license details.

7. What will I be able to do with my digital identity card and digital driving license?
As long as the digital identity card and digital driving license are fully equivalent in their validity to the physical documents you can use them for any corresponding legal use within the territory. International travel (within and outside Schengen) is excluded.

For the use of the digital identity card for transactions with banking institutions or mobile or landline telephony providers, the transitional period until October 1, 2022 applies, as defined in the relevant GPA.

In addition, using the Gov.gr Wallet application you can digitally sign any document on docs.gov.gr, namely: Responsible Declaration, Authorization, Digital Document Certification (digital original of the signature in Greek and English) or Private Agreement with other natural persons.

8. Is there any procedure for which I will still need the paper ID or the paper diploma?
The digital identity card and digital driving license are fully equivalent in validity to physical documents, therefore there is no use of the identity card that requires the presentation of the physical card, except during the transition period for banking institutions or mobile operators or landline.

9. I lost my paper ID and/or paper diploma after I had created the corresponding digital certificates. I have to do something;
You can report the loss of an identity card digitally through gov.gr and the relevant service (Declaration of loss of a police identity card) or at the local Police Stations.

Accordingly, you can declare the loss of your driver’s license at the local Police Stations, KEP, or at the offices of the Transport Directorate of your Region.

As soon as the relevant declaration has been made and if you have issued a digital identity card, the validity of the digital copy will automatically cease.

10. In case someone steals my mobile phone, do I have to do anything to cancel the digital certificates I had saved?
You can revoke the validity of your digital identity card or digital driver’s license through the relevant service at gov.gr.

11. My identity card or driver’s license is temporarily held by some body, e.g. because I am doing my military service or by the Greek Police due to a violation of the Code of Conduct. Can I issue a digital identity card or digital driver’s license?
In case you have already issued a digital copy of the identity card or driver’s license and the physical document needs to be kept temporarily, then as soon as the reservation is systemically declared by the institution or organization making the reservation, the validity and the digital one are revoked.

In case you have not already issued a digital copy of your ID card or driver’s license, then once the reservation is systemically declared by the booking agency or organization, you cannot issue a digital copy until the physical document is returned to you.

You are only allowed to issue a digital identity card or digital driver’s license if your corresponding physical document is valid and in your possession.

12. What is the Quick Scan process and why should I use it?
The Quick Scan feature is a faster and simpler way to verify your documents while always keeping the same level of security and privacy. In situations where speed is essential or there is crowding, for example during boarding an aircraft or entering a concert venue, activating Quick Scan only gives “pre-authorization” for the next scan within the next five minutes from the moment the function is activated . Thus, when checking the QR code, it is not necessary to approve the relevant notification again and the checker sees the details of your digital document directly.

13. I can’t issue my digital ID card and I get failure messages or the information presented is not accurate. What should I do;
If you cannot issue the digital identity card and you keep getting failure messages or the information presented is not accurate, please start a support request via wallet.gov.gr/support.

If you have not issued an ID card or if the ID card has been declared lost, then you cannot issue a digital ID card until the new card is issued.

14. I can’t issue my digital driver’s license and I get failure messages or the information shown is not accurate. What should I do;
If you are unable to issue your digital driver’s license and keep getting issuance failure messages, most likely your driver’s license has not been updated with your TIN. To update the VAT number, please visit drivers-vehicles.services.gov.gr and follow the relevant steps. Once your driver’s license is updated with your VAT number, you will be able to issue your digital driver’s license as well.

If you have not been issued an identity card or if the identity card has been declared lost, then you cannot issue a digital driving license until the new card is issued.

15. I can’t verify a digital document as either a controlled (eg I don’t get notifications) or a controller (eg my calls fail). What should I do;
Please make sure that in the settings of your device the receipt of notifications for Gov.gr Wallet is activated and that the network you are on does not limit Gov.gr Wallet calls. In case there is a lingering problem during a check, you can always use the “Quick Scan” function.

Also, if the problem persists you can delete and reinstall the app.

Finally, if you encounter a problem that has not been resolved by the above steps, you can send your question or support request via wallet.gov.gr/support.

16. I keep getting audit notices for one of my digital documents, or I got an audit notice when I wasn’t expecting it. What should I do;
In the event that you receive one or more notifications while you have not shown your digital document to an inspector, then you can very simply, easily and quickly recall the existing digital document through the relevant option in the application and reissue it.
