Digital identities: From October 1st they will be valid for banks and mobile phone companies

The same validity as the corresponding physical certificates have the digital copies of identity cards and driving licenses within the Greek territory that are activated on a daily basis by hundreds of thousands of citizens, as the relevant process is in full progress. Therefore, citizens can display them instead ID card or driver’s license.

According to the Joint Ministerial Decision on citizens’ transactions with banks, with other financial institutions and with fixed and mobile telephony service providers, digital copies of identity cards will be valid from October 1, 2022. Until October, when the individual details of the use of digital copies of identity cards in transactions with banks and telephone companies will be announced, those dealing with banks and landline and mobile telephone companies will continue to use the documents required in their paper form.

It is recalled that the platform https://wallet.gov.gr has already been put into operation and until today Wednesday noon is available for citizens whose VAT number ends in a digit from 1 to 7 and who wish to activate their digital identity card and/or digital driver’s license. The design foresees that one more expiration will be unlocked every day. It is noted that the activation of the application is based on the specific programming but the application is available for download at any time for both iOS and Android mobiles.

The digital copy of the identity card, as announced, does not constitute a travel document. Therefore, it can only be used on domestic flights, but not on international flights or movements within the Schengen area. Frequently asked questions and answers can be found in the application and at wallet.gov.gr. In addition, citizens can submit service and support requests to wallet.gov.gr/support.
