All-day schools, kindergartens and primary schools, with opening hours until 5.30 pm, have been announced – see which ones

The schools -primary and kindergartens- which will operate from September with opening hours until 5:30 in the afternoon, instead of until 4:00 p.m. which has been in effect until now, were announced by the Ministry of Education.

As announced by the Ministry of Education, criteria such as the school’s student population, the number of students already studying full-time and the number of operating full-time departments were taken into account for the selection of school units. The program will be implemented in approximately 50% of the departments that operate today as full-time, i.e. in almost 5,000 departments in Athens, Thessaloniki and the surrounding area.

The goal of the expanded free education program is twofold:

On the one hand, the quality upgrade of education for our children, through:

activities such as educational robotics, experiments, rhetoric, safe and creative Internet navigation, sports, traditional or modern dances, visual arts, crafts and constructions, learning musical instruments
extra time for learning, studying and playing at school.

On the other hand, the support of the family, with:

approximation of the school with the working hours of the parents,
more free, creative time at home, since the study will be completed at school,
expansion of free education benefits.
It is worth noting that the access of all students to the extended full-day is free, without any participation criteria.

Parents will be informed of all the details regarding the enrollment of their children in the extended Full Day in the first days of September and before the start of classes, by the Principals of the school units.

The Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Niki Kerameosstated: “We are announcing today the school units that will implement from the new school year the extended all-day school until 5:30 p.m. This new initiative has a two-fold goal: on the one hand to ensure more and better resources for our children by further upgrading the public free education, on the one hand to support working parents, achieving a greater approximation between school hours and the hours of working parents. We create a school within the community, with students expressing themselves creatively through new educational activities and having more quality time at home. And with parents who can better fit into working life, enjoying better quality benefits than public, free education.”
