Alexis Tsipras, the President of PASOK – Movement for Change Mr. Nikos Androulakis, the General Secretary K.E. of K.K.E. Mr. Dimitris Koutsoumba, the President of “Hellenic Solution” Mr. Kyriakos Velopoulos, the Secretary of MeRA25 Mr. Yanis Varoufakis, the Minister of Environment and Energy Mr. Kostas Skrekas, the Minister of the Interior Mr. Makis Voridis, the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Mr. Christos Stylianidis, the Deputy Minister of the Interior Mr. Stelios Petsa, the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Mr. Giorgos Amyras, the Deputy Minister of the Interior (Macedonia – Thrace) Mr. Stavros Kalafati, the Head of the First Instance Prosecutor’s Office of Thessaloniki Mr. Panagiotis Panagiotopoulos, the Coordinator of the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia – Thrace, Mr. Ioannis Savvas, the Head of the General Directorate of Forestry of ADMTH, Mr. Nikita Fragiskakis, the Head of the Thessaloniki Forestry Office, Ms. Sultana Kalaitzis, the Regional Governor of Central Macedonia, Mr. Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the MPs of Thessaloniki 1st and 2nd and the Mayors of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki.
As stated in the letter, which he characterizes as a last cry of anguish, there is a great risk of mourning victims as the risk of serious traffic accidents is high.
“We are reminded of this in the most dramatic way by the accident that happened on the Kilkis-N. Petritsiou provincial road (11.7.2022), where two young people lost their lives and others were seriously injured due to wild boars” the letter states, explaining that great anxiety and the fear is that a similar accident, even a fatal one, will occur on the Ring Road of Thessaloniki, when wild boars in packs of 15-20 individuals come down from the adjacent forest and attempt to cross the road.
“We do not want to imagine what can happen in such a case during the night and midnight hours on this road with very heavy vehicle traffic, and indeed at high speeds, given that the existing lighting is not in full operation every day, but nor is there daily policing – traffic of patrol cars. Thus, one can easily understand what a tragic event can happen when, in the evening hours, drivers suddenly find themselves confronted with passing groups and collide with them. It is certain that we will mourn victims, which the everyone is avoiding” the letter states, among other features.
The letter in detail
“Recently, the phenomenon of the massive reappearance of wild boars in the settlement of Pefka has taken on highly dangerous and alarming dimensions as they circulate by the dozens in the main streets and in the yards of houses, while they have even reached the borders of the ring road.
According to the testimonies of residents, who videotaped and photographed wild boars in the yards of their homes, the phenomenon in July was on the rise as they continued to descend in herds from the adjacent forest of Sheikh Su.
The number of these wild animals has increased enormously, and the situation may very soon be uncontrolled due to the rapid increase of the population. Characteristic are the numerous testimonies of residents of the Municipal Unit of Pefko about the presence of wild boars in the last period of time throughout the range of the area. Herds of wild boars have been recorded in the main streets of Pefka, specifically on Papanikolaou Avenue, the central axis of Unity and the road leading to the “G. Papanikolaou”, on Konstantinoupoleos Street, on Agia Triados, Rodon and Demokratia Streets, as well as on Irini Street, where in July they crossed the point in front of the Municipal Store!
Accordingly, herds of wild boars are reported throughout the area and not exclusively near the forest, that is, they now pass through the entire urban environment, as for example on the streets of Oneiro, Platonos, Sokratous, Nikis, Angelon, Eutychias, etc. Their passage, especially through the central roads of the area, it often leads to the stoppage of traffic and there is a risk of causing serious traffic accidents. The situation is resolved with the assistance of the Police and the Fire Department when required.
In fact, due to the rapid increase of wild boars in the area, numerous herds have formed, according to the recorded testimonies of the residents of the area, which each time consist of at least twelve wild boars, while at a point in the area, namely on Artemis Street, in an uncovered area, it has been recorded herd consisting of 24 wild boars, four big and 20 small! Wild boars are looking for food and are often seen looking for it in garbage cans or eating the fruits of trees, such as mulberries and figs.
There are also many times when residents come face to face with wild boars, and even more so children who play carelessly in various central parts of the area, or even outside their homes, as a result of which they are frightened and often do not react appropriately so that there is a serious risk to their safety.
In order to understand the seriousness of the situation, we are attaching a map of the area with the points, as well as audio-visual material that has been collected with the assistance of the residents of the area. . The accident that happened on the provincial road Kilkis-N reminds us of this in the most dramatic way. Petritsiou (11.7.2022), where two young people lost their lives and others were seriously injured due to wild boars. This is exactly our great anxiety and fear, that is, that a similar accident, even a fatal one, will occur on the Ring Road of Thessaloniki, when wild boars in packs of 15-20 come down from the adjacent forest and try to cross the road.
We do not want to imagine what can happen in such a case during the night and midnight hours on this road with very heavy vehicle traffic, and indeed at high speeds, given that the existing lighting is not in full operation every day, but neither and daily policing-police traffic is present. Thus, one can easily understand what a tragic event can happen when, in the evening hours, drivers are suddenly faced with passing groups and collide with them. It is certain that we will mourn victims, something that everyone avoids… This danger, however, also exists on Georgiou Papanikolaou Avenue, where – in any case – the ambulances, transporting patients, are forced to develop a high speed, while at high speeds they move I.X. vehicles and trucks. In the most dramatic and intense way, therefore, with this letter, we are sending an “SOS” message to deal with the situation, which is spreading fear and terror among the residents who are unsuspectingly faced with herds of wild boars in the yards of the houses them and in common areas frequented by citizens and small children.
So, once again we come back to the issue and call upon you to take immediate initiatives to control and curb the phenomenon before we mourn victims. Its outbreak poses risks for the residents, but also for the passengers who at any moment can find themselves facing packs on the pavement of the roads they cross.
Following all of the above, we ask you to immediately take your own actions to deal with the phenomenon and prevent any unwanted tragic event“.
