Significant deterioration are expected to present the meteorological conditions in our country during the three days from Sunday to Tuesday, based on the latest available forecast data analyzed by the FLAME pyrometeorological team of the National Observatory of Athens (EAA) / meteo.gr.
The cause of this significant deterioration is strengthening of northerly winds (above 5 Beaufort) combined with the establishment of very hot and dry conditions, which will significantly increase flammability of dead forest fuels. Overall, the fire-meteorological conditions during the period 7-9 August are expected to be characterized by the particularly dangerous for forest fires “Hot + Dry + Windy” type of weather (hot, dry and windy).
In particular, today, Sunday, August 7:
– Very high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads is expected in Kavala (including Thassos), Xanthi, Rhodope, Evros, Samothraki, Lemnos, Lesvos, Chios and more locally in Serres and Drama.
– High potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads is expected in Attica, Boeotia, N. and N. Evia, Corinthia, Argolis and more locally in N. Fthiotida.
– High potential for wind-driven forest fires is expected in S. Crete and the northernmost islands of the Cyclades.
– Locally moderate/high potential for plume-driven (pyro-inductive) forest fires is expected in Ilia, Achaia and Etoloakarnania.
On Monday August 8:
– Very high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads is expected in Kavala (including Thassos), Xanthi, Rhodope, Evros, Samothraki, Lemnos, Phocis and in the south and east of Halkidiki.
– Very high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads is expected in Attica, Boeotia, N. and N. Evia, Corinth, Argolis, Laconia, and more locally in Phthiotida, Achaia, N. Evia, N. Lesvos and Chios.
– Locally high potential for wind-driven forest fires is expected in Thessaloniki, Pella, Serres, Drama, Kilkis and Lefkada.
– Locally moderate/high potential for plume-driven (pyro-inductive) forest fires is expected in Ilia, Achaia and Etoloakarnania.
On Tuesday August 9:
– Very high potential for wind-driven wildfires with potentially high heat loads expected in Kavala (including Thassos), Xanthi, Rhodope, Evros, Attica, Boeotia, N and N Evia, Corinth and Argolis, and more locally in Laconia, Arcadia, Achaia, Phthiotida and N. Evia.
– Locally high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads is expected in Thessaloniki, Halkidiki (Kassandra), Pella, Serres, Drama, and W. Crete.
– Locally moderate/high potential for plume-driven (pyro-inductive) forest fires is expected in Ilia, Achaia and Etoloakarnania.
In the above geographic zones, special attention should be paid to areas where northerly winds will “align” with topography and forest fuel (eg, when the wind blows perpendicular to the slope of a densely vegetated mountain mass), maximizing the potential manifestation of extreme fire behavior.
In addition, according to the meteo, in the above geographical zones the estimated moisture content of the dead forest fuel will not exceed 10-12% during the midday/afternoon hours, an element that will facilitate the ignition, maintenance and transmission of the fire, while it will remain at similar levels (12-14%) and during the night, limiting the nocturnal “control window” of the fire.
