Tourists wishing to leave must have five negative PCR tests in the past seven days, health authorities said
More than 80,000 tourists have been stranded in the Hainan Island in southern China after detection cases of Covid prompting authorities to cancel all flights and rail transport locally.
Today, 483 cases of coronavirus were reported in the resort town of Sanya, which has more than a million residents, on Hainan Island, nicknamed the “Hawaii of China.”
All flights from Sanya, a particularly popular spot for surfers, were canceled over the weekend and train ticket sales were suspended.
Tourists wishing to leave must have five negative PCR tests over the past seven days, health authorities said.
Hotels in the city must offer their customers a 50 percent discount until travel restrictions are lifted, an authority spokesman said during a press briefing on Saturday.
In Sanya, public entertainment venues such as spas, karaoke bars and bars have been closed since last week, but essential services such as supermarkets and pharmacies remain open.
China is the only major economy that continues to implement a zero-spread Covid strategy, imposing lockdowns and long-term quarantines.
The country’s borders have remained largely closed since early 2020, barring the entry of foreign visitors.
