A photo from Navagio beach in Zakynthos, where two tourists are pictured taking a selfie next to a pile of garbage, has been making the rounds on the internet for the last few hours.
A mountain of plastic bottles, cans of soft drinks, bags of garbage on one of the most popular beaches of the country, the wreck of Zakynthos, are depicted in the photo published by the environmentalist Michalis Bakas, causing reactions.
“The bad thing about the case for me is on the one hand first of all for the visitors because to go there you pay a sum of money so it means that you are not there by chance, you appreciate and evaluate this wonderful landscape, you will be there for a couple of hours, you know that you will stay for a short time so you don’t have many things with you, so you have to be respectful when leaving there, you have to think about who will collect these things”, the environmentalist, Michalis Bakas.
For its part, the Municipality clarifies with its announcement that it cannot intervene in the situation and that there is a competent committee for this matter.
“We as a municipality do not have any right to intervene in anything. There is a competent committee that is responsible for the organization and cleaning of the beach on a daily basis. The president of the committee, Panagiota Dionysopoulou, has placed a security guard at the site, so he should have already inform the Ministry of Tourism about the problem with the garbage in Navagio”.
“We’ve all obviously had a bottle of water, eh, it’s not the same bottle of water when you drink it and put it in your bag and on the way back leave it in a trash can,” says the environmentalist, Michalis Bakas.
Navagio beach gathers a large number of tourists every year, but there are many who do not respect the area and leave their trash, as a result of which they remain there without anyone picking them up…
