Uproar over the garbage at the Zakynthos Shipwreck: They collected it… boat owners – “Milos” with the responsibilities

The photos with the mountains of garbage on the beautiful coast of Ai Giorgi caused a stir at the Shipwreck of Zakynthos, while then followed the well-known blame ball between the authorities.

Finally, as informed by the imerazante site, the consortium of boats “Porto Vromi – Maries” and specifically the president of the consortium, Dionysis Giatras, took the initiative themselves and decided to clean the beach last Saturday afternoon.

As the local site emphasizes, the cooperation of all involved bodies and authorities is required, however, in order to make a realistic record of the existing situation and a serious planning for the future based on:

a) promoting alternative forms of tourism,
b) in the upgrading of public and private infrastructures (ports, marinas, road network, sewage, but also in the construction of new modern tourist units and the upgrading of existing units) and
c) in the training of human resources.

Zakynthos lives from tourism and it must have more people, but it must keep up with the infrastructure, it must be “shielded” it is pointed out.

The mountain of plastic bottles, soda cans, garbage bags on one of the most popular beaches in the country published the environmentalist Michalis Bakas causing reactions.

“The bad thing about the case for me is on the one hand first of all for the visitors because to go there you pay a sum of money so it means that you are not there by chance, you appreciate and evaluate this wonderful landscape, you will be there for a couple of hours, you know that you are going to stay for a short time so you don’t have a lot of things with you, so you have to be respectful actually leaving there you have to think about who is going to collect these things”, the environmentalist noted in his post.

“We’ve all obviously had a bottle of water, isn’t it the same bottle of water when you drink it and put it in your bag and on the way back leave it in a bin” adds the environmentalist.

“Ball” of responsibilities

For its part, the Municipality states in a statement that it cannot intervene in the situation and that there is a competent committee for this matter.

“We as a municipality do not have any right to intervene in anything. There is a competent committee that is responsible for the organization and cleaning of the beach on a daily basis. The president of the committee, Panagiota Dionysopoulou, has placed a security guard at the site, so he should have already inform the Ministry of Tourism about the problem with the garbage in Navagio”.

However, on the other hand, the Committee for Model Tourist Utilization and Protection of the Zakynthos Shipwreck emphasizes in its letter that the collection of waste does not fall within its competences, which is a process that was and remains the responsibility of the Municipal Authority.

In the last few hours, a photo has been circulating on the internet depicting a pile of garbage on one of the most world-famous beaches of our country, that of Navagio Zakynthos. As you know, the responsibilities of the Committee for Model Tourist Utilization and Protection of the Zakynthos Shipwreck, based on Article 68, Law 4875/2021 (Α΄250) as it stands, do not include the collection of waste, a process that was and remains the responsibility of the Municipal Authority.
