The fire in the area has been contained, with the Fire Department still on alert for fear of rekindling.

The Regional Commander of the Fire Service of Crete, Giorgos Tsikalas, noted in his statements to neakriti.gr that the fire is now under elementary demarcation while he emphasized that the operations are in full progress. In particular, 25 vehicles of the fire service with 70 employees are currently fighting the flames, while two helicopters continue to operate from the air.

“We are and will remain on alert,” clarified Mr. Tsikalas, stating that the fear of flare-ups remains.

The mayor of the area, Minas Stavrakakis, is also optimistic about the outcome of the operation, as he estimates that the fire will be fully extinguished before night falls.

According to the available information, the damage caused by the fire is limited.
