The mayor Giorgis Marinakis, in a meeting on the subject, shared with those present his thoughts, opinions and concerns regarding the parameters regarding the possibility of extending the tourist season, as well as the possibilities of the businesses that they or their associations represent.
With the aim of the organized effort to extend the tourist season, the Tourism and Entrepreneurship Committee of the Municipality of Rethymno sent availability data requested by the Minister of Tourism, Vassilis Kikilia and concerning the businesses of the Rethymno area.
The mayor Giorgis Marinakis, in a meeting on the subject, shared with those present his thoughts, opinions and concerns regarding the parameters regarding the possibility of extending the tourist season, as well as the possibilities of the businesses that they or their associations represent. The members of the Tourism Committee pledged to provide additional information on the availability of hospitality and catering infrastructure during the months of November to February. According to the statements of the vice-mayor of Tourism and Entrepreneurship, Pepis Birlirakis, after many years of efforts in the direction of lengthening the tourist season, we are getting closer and closer to achieving the goal, with the support of the ministry.
“We have not stopped believing that Crete should be on the map of winter tourism, and even more so Rethymno, which for ten years has had this goal and is fighting to establish the necessary framework for winter tourism and increase the number of visitors during the winter months”, said Ms. Birliraki, speaking to APE BEE. He even stated that: “… for the product of winter tourism, all the municipalities of the prefecture of Rethymnon have all the infrastructure that can not only accommodate but also attract the interest of every visitor and which, among other things, have to give to the knowledge, experience and life of a genuine of Crete, which is more obvious and more distinct in the calm months of winter, beyond the noisy life of summer”. Together with the other municipalities of the prefecture, the Municipality of Rethymno has prepared a program which Mr. Kikilias, as Minister of Tourism, is aware of. “This is a complete program for everything that the prefecture has, what every Tour Operator needs, and in fact Rethymno in combination with Chania and Heraklion, cities and prefectures that we have universities, a live audience of citizens, events throughout the year with complete themes for every interest, we are sure that the time has come to prove, with the help of the official state, that we can support winter tourism together with of course the environment we have, the good weather and the climate of Crete”.
Pepi Birliraki explained to APE MPE that the following winter will be a very difficult winter with increased, as she described, needs on many levels: “We are able to offer the infrastructure, the program for manual tourism, our experience but and our absolute willingness to host and prove that Crete exists all year round, capable of proving what Greece, Crete winter tourism means. But we will also need the help of the government to get through the difficult winter and to strengthen the individuals involved in tourism and its entire chain as an industry and allied professions. Help so that everyone can be held. We will deliver all the tools to help the minister in his targeting and his vision, but we too must be strengthened because for Rethymno and I believe for Crete as a whole, it is very important that this experiment succeeds”.
