He asked for citizens’ participation in the free inventory of all elevators the Minister of Development, Takis Theodorikakosunderlining that this is an “important process for everyone’s safety” and is the first step of a comprehensive monitoring and upgrading strategy.
OR procedure is mandatoryfree and available online until November 30, 2025. Each registered lift will acquire a unique registration number, necessary for its legal and safe operation.
“Citizens are asked to cooperate for their safety. No supporting documents are required, the census is simple and free of cost,” the minister pointed out during a press conference.
As highlighted, the Elevator Inventory Register is a national initiative with a purely social and preventive character. Citizens are urged to respond immediately to ensure the safe and legal operation of all lifts in the country, protecting lives and avoiding future fines.
What does the inventory include?
The Minister of Industry, Lefteris Kritikos, explained that the inventory is done through the special platform of the Registry, using the personal TaxisNet codes. The user is asked to declare:
– Year of installation
– Number of stops
– Operating status (active, inactive)
– If there is certification
– If it is registered in a municipality file
– KAEK number of the property
Even if some data is missing, the registration can proceed with declarations of “unknown” or “temporarily unavailable” data.
In case of duplicate registrations, the cross-checking will be done through KAEK.
What are the penalties for non-compliance?
Those who do not carry out the inventory by the deadline risk having the lift sealed until its re-evaluation and fines of 1,000 euros for lifts in residences, 2,500 euros for mixed uses (residential and commercial) and 5,000 euros for lifts in public buildings and shopping centers (malls).
Mr. Kritikos noted that “the fine is not an end in itself. The point is to maintain safety.”
Only 10% of the lifts are recorded
About 80,000 elevators have been inventoried so far, a small number compared to the estimated 900,000 installations nationwide.
THE president of POMIDA, Stratos Paradiaswelcomed the initiative and invited both owners and property managers to proceed with the declaration, underlining that it is a simple procedure, without any financial burden for its submission.
Industrial sector: A belated but necessary measure
The president of Elevator Maintenance, George Vlassopoulos, characterized the census as “a necessary step that comes decades late».
“The inventory covers all elevators, even the elevators that were not declared in the building permits. Only when it is completed will we be able to accurately calculate the costs for upgrades and certifications,” he said.
He clarified that the maintainer can help with the process, but no payment is required for the inventory.
