Patoulidou: For Tedoglou and Drisbiotis to reach the gold medals… My God, how much endurance is needed

The Olympic gold medalist of Barcelona and deputy regional governor of Thessaloniki mentioned the sacrifices and the anxieties of the Greek champions until they manage to climb to the highest step of the podium, in European and also world events. Voula Patoulidouon the occasion of the two gold medals of Miltos Tentoglou in the long run and Antigoni Drisbiotis in the walk.

“I was so happy for our two children. And in the fight they gave and in the statements they made. I enjoyed all their presence, spontaneity and their inexhaustible, hard-working talent. And just because they have so much zeal for life, so much endurance, patience and clear goals, you say that there are new children who show the way and stand out”, said Mrs. Patoulidou on the radio station of APE – MPE “Agency 104.9Fm” for the Greek successes in the European championship in Munich.

On the occasion of her own experiences in the field of sports, Mrs. Patoulidou, when asked what it takes for someone to climb to the highest step of the podium, answered: “He must be a coppersmith. Do you know what championship means? What background do you have with yourself? How many potholes and how many slopes do you slide down? And you think: will my anxiety and mood stop, so that I can get up, fight and work again to achieve my goal?’

Regarding the emotions she feels every time she sees the Greek champions achieve success in the track and field, the Barcelona Olympic gold medalist said: “My throat fills up and tears come to my eyes. Because when the praise comes, all the negatives get smaller, shorter, disappear from your visual horizon. But in order to get there – my God and my Virgin Mary! – how much endurance is needed…”.

Ms. Patoulidou added that many times the tears of the athletes that the world sees when they stand on the winners’ podium are the accumulated tears of the difficult moments until the recognition: “You can’t imagine what it’s like to be on the field and looking in the stands to find a look, see if they believe you. On the podium, the tears are all these moments gathered, of disappointment but also of being able to…”.
