“International Bat Nights” have been held since 1997 in more than 30 countries

The Central Macedonia Protected Areas Management Unit and the House of the Keeper of Aliki invite the public of Thessaloniki to an evening of getting to know bats.

The meeting point for the event will be outside the House of the Keeper of Aliki, in Angelochori, on Monday, August 22 at 7:30 pm, as part of the international institution “International Bat Nights”.

The “International Nights of Bats” have been taking place since 1997 in more than 30 countries with the aim of informing and raising awareness about these misunderstood but so useful mammals, which as a whole are protected in Europe. Bats, or chiroptera, are insectivorous animals that fly long distances to feed. As stated in a related announcement by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA), “if we consider that a single bat can consume up to 2,000 insects in one night, we understand their role in controlling the spread of epidemics and diseases.”

15 species of bats have been recorded in the Axios Delta National Park, of which six are also present in the area of Angelochori. The most important colonies or small groups of them have been identified in human buildings (old abandoned cannons and buildings, bridges, etc.).

The program of the event includes presentations about the Protected Area, about the bats it hosts and their sound detection methods, as well as storytelling, with the participation of researchers who are currently preparing the study of recording the populations in the Axios Delta National Park as part of the program TODAY.
