Citizens are advised to avoid travel to areas already affected or expected to be affected by severe weather.
The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis, draws the attention of citizens who are in areas where severe weather phenomena occur or are expected to occur in the coming days, addressing them with a strong recommendation not to move unless they have a serious reason.
In his statements after a meeting to evaluate the course of the bad weather, Mr. Stylianidis emphasized that from today and for the next days, until Friday, the bad weather in almost the entire country will intensify.
“Although we are still in summer, we all have to be very careful. The phenomena, in places and at intervals, will be very intense”, he stressed.
According to the minister, all the competent services, and mainly the Regions and Municipalities of the country, have been notified to be on high alert and to take all the necessary preventive measures, especially to prevent the occurrence of flooding phenomena.
Recommendations to citizens:
Strong recommendation to all citizens in the areas where intense phenomena are occurring or expected, not to move unless they have a serious reason.
Special care is required for both drivers and pedestrians. We never cross rapids and torrents (the so-called Irish crossings) on foot or by vehicle. Never, for any reason!
Particular caution is also required from campers, while we also appeal to hoteliers and all tourism workers to warn their hosting tourists to be aware of the bad weather.
Wherever and whenever necessary, relevant announcements will be continuously issued by all agencies. While, if deemed appropriate, 112 will also be activated to send warning messages.
The entire statement of Mr. Stylianides
“My dear fellow citizens,
We held, today, a little while ago, here at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, a meeting, with the participation of the Deputy Minister of the Interior, Stelios Petsas, the leadership of the Fire Department and a representative of the Greek Police, as well as from today and for the next days, as well as on friday, severe weather will intensify in almost the entire country.
Meteorologists draw our attention to the fact that heavy rains and strong storms, localized hail and increased lightning activity are expected.
Although we are still in summer, we all need to be very careful. The phenomena, in places and at intervals, will be very intense.
The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, as of yesterday, following the relevant announcement of the National Meteorological Service regarding the deterioration of the weather, has informed all the competent services, and especially the Regions and Municipalities of the country, to be on heightened alert.
We call on all the agencies involved to be constantly alert to immediately deal with possible consequences due to the bad weather and to take all the necessary preventive measures, especially to prevent the occurrence of flooding phenomena. Constant vigilance is required.
We also address a strong recommendation to all citizens in the areas where strong phenomena are occurring or expected, not to move unless they have a serious reason.
I repeat that the effects, based on meteorological forecasts, will be very intense in places and at intervals and will affect almost the entire country. We will continue to monitor their development, in constant cooperation with all the relevant services.
It is understandable that wherever and whenever necessary, relevant announcements will be continuously issued by all agencies. While, if deemed appropriate, 112 will also be activated to send warning messages.
My dear fellow citizens,
It appears to be a relatively short, but intense bad weather. It may, however, take on dangerous proportions. Please don’t underestimate her. It needs special attention from all of us. We avoid unnecessary travel to the areas affected by the bad weather. We all remain vigilant. Thank you”.
