In total, 80 volunteers collected 10.5 tons of dead fish on Monday and another 500 kilograms today from Lake Cornignon, according to Vincent Garnier, a Federation official responsible for the development of fisheries in the region.
In the operation organized through social networking sites, volunteers went with buckets and collected the few fish that were still alive and then threw them into the Loire. In total, around 100 kg of fish were saved. About three-quarters of the fish that died of suffocation were carp.
Due to the drop in the level of the Loire, which feeds this lake, and in combination with the high temperatures that prevailed in the area, the percentage of oxygen in the water decreased and the algae increased, resulting in the fish dying from suffocation.
