Dinosaur tracks remained buried under water-covered sediments, which helped preserve them.
Due to the prolonged drought, dinosaur tracks – dating back 113 million years – have come to light in a dried-up river bed in Texas, United States, as an official of the American state said yesterday.
Dinosaur tracks remained buried under water-covered sediments, which helped preserve them.
“Due to extremely dry conditions this summer, the river has completely dried up in most places, exposing new tracks in the park,” said Stephanie Salinas Garcia of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The discovery excited the employees of this park, which is located near the city of Dallas and was called “Dinosaur Valley” because of the presence of numerous dinosaur tracks in the surrounding area.
Images posted by Dinosaur Valley State Park on social media show one of the largest sequences of dinosaur tracks in the world. Volunteers rushed to help the experts in cleaning the area, so that the tracks could be seen more easily.
“Most of the tracks recently discovered, in different parts of the river, come from an Acrocanthosaurus,” explained Stephanie Salinas Garcia. The theropod is estimated to have been 5 meters tall and weighed almost seven tons.
Sauroposidon is another type of dinosaur that left its mark in the park. It is estimated that with its long neck it reached a height of 18 meters and weighed about 44 tons.
“Dinosaur tracks in the park date back 113 million years,” said Stephanie Salinas Garcia.
Dinosaur Valley State Park opened its gates to the public in 1972. As outlined on its website, it aims to protect the numerous prehistoric tracks found in the area.
