Fifteen years today from the deadly Zaharo fires that claimed 37 lives and reduced over 400,000 acres of forest and agricultural crops to ashes. The city is still trying to heal its wounds and keep alive the memory of the people who were lost.
Mayor Zacharos Kostas Alexandropoulos on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the deadly fires of 2007, in his statement he points out about this sad day: “Today marks the 15th anniversary of the deadly fires of 2007. We all feel sorrow for our fellow human beings who died tragically on the day the one who marked the life of all of us and we empathize with the pain of their own people. 37 of our people lost their lives, houses and 400 thousand hectares of forest and agricultural lands were completely destroyed.
Fifteen years after the deadly fire, the Municipality of Zacharos is still dealing with the devastating effects of this biblical catastrophe. The population has shrunk dramatically with our young people leaving because they cannot find avenues for professional rehabilitation and development is progressing at a slow pace. It is worth noting that the then government, recognizing the scale of the disaster, proceeded to draw up a memorandum of cooperation with the then municipal authority for the utilization of the beach front of the Municipality. The memorandum allowed the installation of permanent canteens, tourist kiosks, and sports facilities in an area of ​​approximately 10 kilometers, which would contribute to the tourism and economic development of the Municipality. But the memorandum faded and was not implemented. In its place, in 2018, the presidential decree for the protection of nature was imposed, which steadily leads us to underdevelopment.
August 24th is a Day of Remembrance and Mourning for the Municipality of Zacharos. However, it should also be a day to remind the state of the debt it has to support our Municipality in practice, which until now is only trying to recover with its own forces.
