Hundreds of calls for pumping water to the fire department due to the severe weather in the country

The fire department, in its announcement, appeals to the citizens to be especially careful in the areas where the intense phenomena are manifested, as well as in the coming days which are expected to continue in various regions of the country.

Several problems were created by bad weather and today in many regions of the country.

According to the fire department, 128 calls were made towards the center of operations, most of which were for pumping water, while it was also necessary to transport people to safe places.

Particularly:

In Attica, 78 calls were made, of which 64 were for pumping water, two for cutting down trees, 4 for removing objects, and 6 for removing people to a safe place.

In the Region of K. Macedonia, 32 calls were made, of which 24 were for pumping water, 4 for cutting trees and 4 for transporting people to a safe place.

In the Region of W. Macedonia, 4 calls were made, of which two were for pumping water and one for washing the road surface.

In the Region of Western Greece, 4 calls were made, of which 1 for water pumping and 3 for tree cutting.

On the island of Thira (Santorini), there were 12 calls for water pumping.

On the island of Mykonos, 6 calls were made for pumping water.

On the island of Andros, 6 calls were made for pumping water.

It is recalled that according to the Emergency Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena issued by the E.M.Y., rapid and intense rainfall is expected from tonight until tomorrow evening in the following areas:

A. For the sea-coastal parts of eastern Macedonia and Thrace and the islands of the northern Aegean (mainly Limnos, Samothraki and Thassos) from today early evening until the morning hours tomorrow Thursday.

B. For central Macedonia (mainly the prefectures of Halkidiki, Pieria and Imathia as well as for the seaside parts of the prefecture of Thessaloniki) from today evening until the early afternoon tomorrow Thursday.

C. For the Sporades, Thessaly (mainly the prefectures of Magnesia and Larissa), central and northern Evia and the northern parts of eastern Sterea (mainly the prefecture of Fthiotida) from tonight until tomorrow night, Thursday.

At the same time, today the regular briefing on the forest fires and the operational readiness of the Fire Brigade, due to the forecast of dangerous weather phenomena, was held by the press representative of the PS, fire chief Raphaela Tsima.

Ms Tsima emphasized that in the last week, the Fire Brigade was called to intervene in 652 urban fires, to carry out 826 relief services and to deal with 272 forest fires, of which 39 were in the last 24 hours. At the same time, in addition to the forest fires, the fire department also has to deal with the many problems caused by the heavy rains that hit several areas.

According to the data presented by the press representative, the Operations Center of the Fire Brigade received on Monday (22/8) in Ptolemaida, 222 calls for pumping water from underground residential and business premises and on Tuesday (23/8) in Attiki, 164 calls for water pumping, 10 calls for cutting down trees and 12 calls for transporting people to a safe place.

Also, Mrs. Tsima emphasized that according to the EMY’s Emergency Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena, severe weather phenomena are expected in the next 48 hours and for this reason the fire brigade remains on high operational readiness, in order to deal with possible risks from the occurrence of flooding phenomena, but also fires due to the intense lightning activity expected.

Finally, he called on the citizens to be particularly careful and follow the instructions of the competent authorities, while in the areas where dangerous weather phenomena occur or are expected, unnecessary movements should be avoided.
