“I told him to break up and he tried to strangle me” – The screams of agony of victims of violence

by

The protagonist this August is violence. Even the lawyers were surprised by the many complaints.

Maria is 16 years old and lives in a town in Crete. She fell in love with a 20-year-old young man and at first everything seemed like a fairy tale.

He treated her well, looked after her, showed that he cared about her. Until at some point he started behaving strangely and being abrupt towards her. Maria decided to break up with him. But he didn’t accept it. Shortly before the 15th of August, she received the first threat, and even at her home. He shouts and creates a disturbance… Neighbors try to calm the enraged man and succeed. He leaves and two days later asks the girl to meet to talk. She accepts. The meeting takes place in his car. Maria tells him once again that she does not want to be with him and that they should break up. Then he goes overboard: he hits her and tries to choke her. The girl manages to escape from his hands and goes to a central point in the city where she lives and alerts her mother. The complaint to the police is immediate.

Her mother describes what she experienced that day

“The kid jumped out of the car because he had grabbed him by the neck, hit him, so he opened the door, jumped out of the car and left and went somewhere central to a bus stop. I contacted the child after ten minutes, a quarter. I notified the local Police Department. The duty officer along with another person immediately started to go to the place where the child was and collect him and from there I went to the A/T and a complaint was filed. The child went through a medical examiner.” The case has a continuation, however, because as soon as the relatives of the 20-year-old learned that a lawsuit had been filed, they tried in every way to convince the 16-year-old and her family to withdraw. Even with threats as the mother complains.

His father even communicates with her mother. “His dad, after they saw that threats weren’t getting anything, went so far as to take me twelve and a half hours a night and beg me to drop the lawsuit, which there’s not a one in a billion chance I’d do, and he told me that the his son has psychological problems and that he is receiving treatment. I told him I’m not interested and that he won’t make me a happy mother,” says the girl’s mother. The 20-year-old, for his part, had reached the point of uttering threats to the girl and to the mother herself. Threats to kill her…to throw her head into the sea. The young man will give explanations before the justice and the judges are the ones who will decide on his punishment or not. The 16-year-old on the other hand has been living in a state of terror since the day he hit her and tried to choke her. He is unable to leave the house and is already being monitored by a psychologist in an attempt to manage the situation. These are the two sides of the coin. From the side of the victim and from the side of the alleged perpetrator.

He sent her to the hospital…”

On August 31 in Thessaloniki, the lawsuit of an 18-year-old girl against her 22-year-old ex-partner will be heard. The blows she received were so severe that she was taken to the hospital shortly after the Fifteenth of August with doctors giving her first aid. It was the third time he had raped her in a span of 6 months. It was repeated abusive behavior. Every time he hit her, he apologized, but after a while there was an episode again due to someone’s fight. The 18-year-old has her parents by her side who, as they say, want exemplary punishment for the perpetrator and have filed a lawsuit against him. The girl is in bad condition and is trying to recover from the injuries both physically and mentally.

Her lawyer Othon Papadopoulos

“The case has gone to court anyway in order to investigate the case in depth and to assign criminal responsibilities to the perpetrator. Every fight always resulted in partner violence. When things calm down then everything is fine for him but a few days, then we have history repeating itself. In the last episode there was serious physical damage and the doctors even recommended that the girl remain in the hospital. At the moment, the 18-year-old is in a bad psychological state while her parents are standing by her side. And this is the important thing to have support for the victims from the environment”.

The lawyer Christina Vathia

“The main charge is a violation of personal data that is even a felony. What we notice in the complaints is that the cases are constantly increasing and we are always complaining about revenge porn. Of course, the safe method is to not have any material for one of the two partners to use, but even if there is a video recording of private moments, it does not mean that there is consent for publication. The phenomenon can take on alarming proportions. Studies abroad, specifically in Italy, have shown that victims sometimes cannot handle the psychological burden of such disparaging publicity and are even led to commit suicide.”

“The bell has rung long ago…”

The protagonist this August is violence. Even the lawyers were surprised by the many complaints. Victims are mainly young girls Psychiatrist Dimitris Souras explains: “Violence is one thing. It comes from the violence it creates within the family and is reinforced by the lack of boundaries. The violent man is developing, he is not sick and for this reason the first time of violence should be reported immediately and the victims should be removed and not stay close to him. As a society unfortunately now we are starting to understand what the words denunciation and removal mean and also the symptoms of violent people are obvious but until now we didn’t want to see them because we were afraid of the stigma, the breakup of the family and unfortunately most of the women and children are dependent on the abuser. We have to change as individuals and therefore as a society and we have to understand that when we cannot deal with such situations we immediately ask for help from relatives, experts, the state (police and support groups). Experts warn: Action must be taken and above all victims must report. The phrase “I’ll kill you” should now be taken seriously.
