Official visit to New York held last weekend o Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannisin the context of his scheduled meeting with the Mayor of the city, Eric Adams. During the meeting, Messrs. Bakoyannis and Adams, focused on issues related to the tourism sector and specifically on the prospect of further strengthening Athenian tourism from the American market with initiatives that will contribute to attracting even more American visitors in the coming years to Athens.
Mr. Bakoyiannis expressed his satisfaction with the spectacular increase this year in the number of American tourists in the Greek capital, noting that a large part of the visitors comes from New York. As he pointed out, this is because, on the one hand, direct flights from the USA to Athens are now more than ever and, on the other hand, because the capital has significantly upgraded its tourism product, the quality of its services, but also the authentic experiences it offers to its visitors.
The agenda of the meeting and the invitation to Athens
The agenda of the conversation between Costas Bakoyannis and Eric Adams included topics of wider interest, such as good practices in everyday matters, but also Athens’ action plan against the climate crisis. At the same time, the two mayors had the opportunity to discuss the issue of the energy crisis, the relations between Greece and the USA, the developments in the Aegean, the recent initiative undertaken by the European mayors of the Eurocities network of cities for the reconstruction of Ukraine, but also international initiatives that intend to jointly undertake.
In fact, Mr. Bakoyiannis invited his counterpart to visit Athens in the next period, an invitation that was warmly accepted by Mr. Adams.
After the meeting, the two mayors came together to a charity event organized by the Greek diaspora in the Assumption community in Southampton, which, thanks to the tireless contribution of Father Alex Karloutsou, brings together a large number of prominent Greek-Americans every year.
Speech to the diaspora and visit to the Church of Agios Nikolaos
The Mayor of Athens, during his short visit to the USA, had the pleasure of addressing a gathering of expatriates from New York, whom he warmly thanked for their timeless, undivided and diverse contribution to Greece: From the promotion and defense of national positions and interests, to investment and development.
Mr. Bakoyannis’ trip to New York concluded with his visit to “Ground Zero” and the iconic Orthodox Church of Agios Nikolaos, which is located in the same place and was buried in 2001 in the rubble of the Twin Towers during the terrorist attack 9/11 attack.
Mr. Bakoyannis was informed about the restoration works of the Church, which will be completed soon, based on the plan of the famous Spanish Architect Santiago Calatrava.
