Who was Saint Alexander?

Patriarch Mitrophanes, appreciating the virtue and qualifications of the elder Alexander, assigned him the duties of protopresbyter and appointed him as his representative to the First Ecumenical Council, which was convened in 325 in Nicaea, Bithynia.

After the end of the Synod and the death of Patriarch Mitrophanis that followed, Alexander assumed the patriarchal throne, which he adorned with his virtues and administrative skills. Among other things, as Patriarch, he strongly resisted the efforts of Arius to convince the emperor Constantine of his supposedly orthodox positions and in general emerged as a guardian of the authentic teaching of the Orthodox Church.

Saint Paul was the Patriarch of Constantinople from 686 to 693 and was an example of a virtuous man and a philanthropic Bishop. During his Patriarchate, specifically in the year 691, the Fifteenth Ecumenical Council was convened, of which he was the President and to which we owe many of the sacred rules formulated by the Fathers of the Orthodox Church in the Fifth and Sixth Councils.

Agios Ioannis was born in Trebizond, at the beginning of the 11th century, and having received a remarkable education, he managed to occupy high political offices. However, he renounced everything and fled to a monastery in Bithynia, where he remained for 10 years obedient to the monastic practice. The reputation of his virtuous life helped him to be called to the priesthood and in a short time to occupy the Patriarchal throne, in which he remained until his death, in the year 1075. His organizational and especially charitable work remained in history as bright examples for the subsequent bishops.

The trinity of the patriarchs of Constantinople, Alexander, Paul and John, remains evidence of God’s blessing in the lives of the people of the Church and society in general.
