Schools without masks and tests: What the expert committee will consider today

Today the committee of experts to determine the protocols under which students will return to classrooms on Monday, September 12. Everything points to students returning to their schools, without masks and without mandatory tests.

“We still have two weeks until schools open. We are in consultation with the Ministry of Education. The logic we have is that in the context of trying not to have measures that are not needed or mandatory measures, this should also be the model in schools. So basically we want the schools to be very close to normality,” said the Minister of Health, Thanos Pleuris.

He added that “we consider that we have left the tests as we had experienced them until now, which were the continuous tests”, said Th. Pleuris and underlined that: “They must be targeted at schools as well, as they do not have the meaning that they had the previous period. The mask, respectively, as a whole – I’m not just talking about schools – we rather want it to have a direction of recommendation, except for public transport and hospitals where we have clearly said that there is an obligation”.

Speaking to SKAI yesterday, president of EINAP, Matina Pagoni dpointed out that it makes no sense to tell children to wear a mask on September 12 to go to school, but called on parents to test their children before sending them to school.

“Children can go without masks and in case we have any complications, when we have raised indicators, the committee here is to suggest what changes should be made. But not to imprison children now and send them wearing masks to schools,” he said characteristically.
