Patras: Brother vs. Brother – Claims Fraudulently Exploited Custody of Their Mother

The case of the death of an 89-year-old woman in Patras, who was found dead in her home last December, after a fire in the kitchen, is taking a new turn.

One of her two sons filed a complaint with the Patras First Instance Prosecutor’s Office, asking to investigate whether there are any criminal responsibilities of his brother for the tragic death of his mother.

The 89-year-old woman suffered from severe functional disorders, practically unable to handle her personal needs, while she had gone missing twice in the past. She lived in a small apartment in the center, together with her one child, who had managed to get her legal support, along with two other people who were not related to her.

The second son claims in his petition that the assignment of legal support for his helpless mother was done without his knowledge and in an inexplicable way, as he and her seven siblings were never informed of this act, while he considers it strange that the court never sought them out.

In his estimation, there was omission and manipulation with the aim of “eating up” his mother’s pension and real estate. According to the complainant, his brother has an incurable gambling addiction.

Mistreatment

The son who filed the lawsuit alleges that his brother, instead of taking care of their mother, mistreated and abused her, leaving her without clothes, money, and even without food. For the above, he has also submitted written certificates from the social service of the Municipality of Patreon that visited the home of the patient, where he found that the sanitary conditions were completely inadequate, that the assistant and the supervisory board did not fulfill their obligations, putting at risk the helpless woman and that the deceased was also a victim of economic exploitation. Namely, that her pension ended up being gambled away by her son who had assumed her protection.

They also sold an apartment

In addition, the son who makes the complaints, discovered after an investigation, that his brother had sold a small, but fully renovated apartment of their mother, for an amount of 7000 euros, while in collusion, as he says with the supervisory board, he had left up to unpaid bills.

The most serious of the brother’s complaints, however, is that his mother was essentially abandoned by her second son and the judicial support committee and was malnourished, with immediate danger to her life, while he asks that the causes of the fire be investigated which broke out in the house and resulted in her gruesome death.

Oligoria and threats

The complaining brother, when he discovered the above, turned to a lawyer to take the required actions, but as he claims, he did nothing. As a result, a fire broke out in the apartment where his mother lived, where she tragically died from 2nd and 3rd degree burns.
The complainant also blames the social service of the Municipality of Patreon for negligence, since one month before his mother’s death, i.e. in October 2021, he did not respond to a prosecutor’s order to immediately remove her from the house where she lived, due to the conditions her supervisor was describing.

In addition, he claims that due to the investigation he has been doing for months, he receives threats to his life and to his family and for these reasons he decided to go to justice.

It should be noted that the fire is still being investigated by the Fire Service, however, as the complainant told “P”, two criminal cases have already been filed against his brother for exposing his mother’s life to danger and for her financial exploitation.
