A man is accused of beating and threatening his wife, in front of the frightened eyes of their minor children.

A man accused of beating and threatening his wife, in front of the terrified eyes of their minor children, was sentenced to 15 months in prison, with a three-year suspension, by the Three-member Criminal Court of Thessaloniki.

As the victim testified, everything happened last Thursday, August 25, in the apartment where they live with their three minor children. The woman had visited her grandmother with her one child, an infant, and when she returned to their home, the accused was furious.

“He is paranoid, he thought that I left our child with my grandmother and that I went elsewhere. When I got home he locked me out for 15 minutes and wouldn’t let me in,” the woman initially testified.

As she later described, as soon as her husband opened the door, she immediately went with the infant into the bedroom and began tidying up. “I heard him swearing obscenely and I tried to talk to him to understand what was going on and he was talking like that in front of our three children. He was furious, he wanted to leave and that’s why I took his cell phone and the house keys so he could stay and talk. Then he hit me in the face with a cuff, grabbed me by the neck and cursed me all the time. I was very scared, everything happened in front of our children”, said the woman.

“I’ll melt your head”

“I was very scared, I honestly couldn’t understand why all this is happening. He turned the house upside down and turned the couches upside down. As soon as we got to the bedroom, he lifted me forcefully into the air, threw me onto the bed and wouldn’t let me move. The children were crying but he wouldn’t stop. Then he threw me on the floor and told me “I will melt your head, give me my cell phone”. I tried to leave the bedroom several times but he wouldn’t let me. In the end he tried to throw me out of the house and the children were crying. He threatened me that he would do it at night when they were sleeping,” the woman testified in court.

As the victim reported, it was not the first time that the accused became violent towards her. In fact, two years ago, a domestic violence case had been heard again when he attacked her. “Then the incident was more serious, but this time I was more afraid and scared because our children were in front. I’ve never seen him like this before. I wasn’t afraid the other times as much as now”, he said, noting that he has now left the house with their three children and they are being hosted by a friend of hers, while he immediately intends to file for divorce.

The defendant’s lawyer stated that it was not the first time that the victim hid her husband’s personal belongings, keys and cell phone in order not to leave the house, pointing out that whenever there is a dispute between the couple, the woman reports that the infant is not his. He also reported that the man filed a lawsuit this morning against his wife, as he claims she first hit him in the neck with a coat hanger.
