Tension prevailed on Wednesday morning outside the premises of the “Malamatina” winery in Kalochori, Thessaloniki.
Police forces removed in front of the entrance a group of striking workers, as well as a number of their supporters. During the police intervention, chemicals were used, as a result of which some of the demonstrators faced breathing problems.
EKAB ambulances were called to the scene and provided them with first aid.
The strikers demand the rehiring of 15 of their dismissed colleagues and the signing of a collective labor agreement. As part of their mobilizations, since the beginning of the month, they prevented the entry of workers who came to work normally.
Twenty days ago the strike was ruled illegal. Today the Police received a prosecutor’s order to remove the strikers from the entrance of the winery.
The All-Union Struggle Front issued a statement condemning the prosecutor’s decision and the police intervention and calls on the Government to withdraw the police force. The strikers say they are determined to continue their struggle.
“The ND Government exceeded every limit and threw away every pretense this morning as it has been acting as the employer’s personal “good man” since dawn, sending the MAT and Prosecutor to beat the workers and break the strike in MALAMATINA. In other words, to break the struggle of the workers who are demanding that their 15 dismissed colleagues go back to work” states the announcement of PAME.
For its part, the company emphasizes that the majority of the employees of the winery wish to work and adds: “the trade unionists of the Union conceal that at the end of February 2022, when the Operational Collective Labor Agreement expired, negotiations took place on the initiative of the Management with the Workers’ Union in order to sign a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, which would guarantee all the benefits and benefits that the employees had with the previous Collective Bargaining Agreement, however, it would exclude the irrationalities and provocative privileges due to which the company fell into its previous unprofitable state ».
