Over 150 forest fires in the last week, most from lightning
560 urban fires and 158 forest fires were called to intervene in the last week Fire brigade, as pointed out by the press representative of the PS, chief of staff, Giannis Artopioos, during the regular weekly briefing on forest fires and weather phenomena. According to Mr. Artophios, in many cases the start of these fires was also caused by the intense lightning activity observed in the Greek area in recent days.
Regarding the two earthquakes that occurred today at noon, namely at 12.56 and 13.10 in the maritime area south-southwest of Samos, the PS Business Center, as Mr. Baker reported, has not received any calls to report injury or damage. In addition, in total, the Fire Brigade from the morning hours of Thursday, August 25, 2022 until today, was called to intervene in 912 cases of assistance as heavy rains and storms occurred in our country in the previous days.
As pointed out by Mr. Bakercharacteristically, yesterday, Tuesday, August 30, 2022, during the afternoon hours, in Western Greece and specifically in the area of ​​Agrinio, Etoloakarnania, due to heavy hail and increased wind intensity, the Operations Center of the Fire Brigade received 40 calls for cutting down trees and pumping water .
“We all remain cautious, especially in the areas where weather phenomena occur or are expected to occur. We are looking for self-protection instructions on the ministry’s website Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. With simple actions we can protect ourselves”, noted Mr. Artopaios and added: “Also, we do not forget that we are still in the fire protection season and it is a given that forest fires will continue to occur. Therefore, the Fire Department still remains ready to deal with them.”
Finally, Mr. Artophios emphasized that the main cause of forest fires is human negligence and underlined: “We must all be very careful. It’s a matter of social responsibility, it’s a matter of protecting ourselves, those around us, the environment.”
