“The Thessaloniki Metro will be one of the most modern in Europe with a lot of innovations” emphasized, among others, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for infrastructure, Mr. Giorgos Karagiannis

Today, Wednesday, the tender for the Maintenance and Operation Agency of the Thessaloniki Metro is announced, as announced by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, in charge of infrastructure, Mr. Giorgos Karagiannis in an interview with “Radio Thessaloniki”.

Mr. Karagiannis spoke of “very great progress in the implementation of the Thessaloniki Metro” as with the PPP tender for the Private Entity that will undertake the Maintenance and Operation of the Means, the last pending issue is closed.

“The Thessaloniki Metro will be one of the most modern in Europe with many innovations” he emphasized and clarified that “the pricing policy is the responsibility of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and will always be determined in favor of the citizens, while the revenue from the tickets will go to to the Greek State”.

“We chose to proceed through the PPP model because the agreement that will result after an international tender will include specific strict conditions for the operation of the Metro and there will be no delays,” he explained.

The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure announced, at the same time, that “the station in Venizelos has already started to be built and the Metro project is progressing according to the schedule”.

“At the end of 2023, Thessaloniki will have both a Metro and an ancient one, as we have committed” emphasized Mr. Karagiannis.

Regarding the regional “FlyOver,” the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure assured that “there is also progress in this important project as the contract with the contractor goes to the Audit Court for review with the aim of signing it by mid-October” and added that “by 2022 we will have construction sites to begin construction.”

Referring to the connection of the city’s port, Mr. Karagiannis emphasized that “at the beginning of 2023, within the first quarter, we will have a temporary contractor for the railway connection of the 6th pier and for the West Thessaloniki Suburban”.

Especially for the Suburban in the west of the city, he emphasized that “Meso will reach Sindos, while it will also serve the TEIs”.

“For the first time a government has an overall planning of interventions in Thessaloniki”. Mr. Karagiannis underlined that “it is the first time that a government has an overall planning of interventions in Thessaloniki and in particular from our side at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, we are implementing a large project program that is progressing according to the schedule”.

In fact, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure insisted on the question of the timetables, noting that “there is no delay, on the contrary, even in small battles that do not determine the overall war, we win. I bring you the example of the “orphan kilometer” of Potidaia and Thermi – Galatista, which are smaller projects but were auctioned, completed and delivered to the citizens by the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, ahead of their schedules”.

In closing, Mr. Karagiannis noted: “I also speak as a Thessalonian, the “Athenian establishment” cannot be to blame for everything and I am referring to the asylum industry, where suddenly we are all experts. Infrastructure projects need seriousness, few words and a lot of work. This is what we consistently do and will continue to do.”
