Today marks one year since the start of the suspension measure for unvaccinated healthcare workers.
By Makis Synodinos
A gathering of health workers who have been suspended is currently underway at Syntagma, in the center of Athens.
As they typically say, “today marks the one-year anniversary of the Health Workers’ Work Suspensions measure, which deprives Hospitals of the services of 7,000 Health Workers for long periods of time”.
In a statement, POEDIN states:
“The remaining ones in the Hospitals, Health Centers, EKAV, Welfare, which are constantly decreasing, work in conditions of work burnout, being in the Hospitals day and night with difficulty, they received a few days off in the summer and dozens of repos are owed to each of them. Of course, the Health Authorities should take into account that there should be preparedness and an operational plan for the Fall and Winter when a new outbreak of the coronavirus is expected, and at the same time, Hospitals should not once again become single-theme, making it difficult to access patients with other diseases (e.g. surgical operations, chronic treatments, etc.). With such staff shortages the services provided are precarious. We call on the Ministers of Health with an amendment in the Parliament to lift the measure of Work Suspensions of Health Care Workers. It is not possible for the system to consider as vaccinated a colleague who did the single-dose vaccine a year and a half ago and correctly works with continuous preventive control and an unvaccinated colleague who got sick six months ago with a greater shield in his body from the corona virus (more antibodies) to be suspended and unable to work with continuous screening for the coronavirus. The vaccine protects against severe disease, which is why we were the first to vaccinate in overwhelming numbers, but it does not protect against disease and transmission. We observe personal protection measures, as our suspended colleagues observed them for 18 months and will observe them after the measure is lifted. September 9, 2022 we are organizing a large Mobilization in Thessaloniki with a march that will start from Hippocrates Hospital at 8am. One of our main demands is the lifting of Work Suspensions”.
