SYRIZA-PS calls for the withdrawal of the bill for the return of Cycladic antiquities to Greece

In their letter to the president of the Parliament, Messrs. Gerovasilis and Anagnostopoulou report that “this is an extreme bill, which goes against the archaeological legislation, exposes the country and distances it from the legal claim of antiquities that have been illegally removed from its territory”.

The withdrawal of the bill concerning the return of Cycladic antiquities from the USA, as “the ground is smoothed for the legalization of antiquities and illegal exports of antiquities”, request the president of the Parliament, the secretary of the SYRIZA-PS Committee, Olga Gerovasilis and head of the party’s Culture department, Sia Anagnostopoulou.

In their letter, Mr. Gerovasilis and Anagnostopoulou raise “serious issues” for the bill of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, which was submitted on Thursday, September 1, will be submitted to the competent committee next Monday (September 5) to be voted on in the plenary session of the Parliament next Thursday (September 8). entitled: “Sanction of the agreement between the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Museum of Cycladic Art of Athens, the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York and the Institute of Ancient Greek Culture of Delaware, regarding the return to Greece of a collection of one hundred and sixty-one ( 161) of antiquities of the Cycladic Civilization, located in New York and the exhibition of this and other antiquities of the Cycladic Civilization in the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York”.

As they say, “this is an extreme bill, which goes against the archaeological legislation, exposes the country and distances it from the legal claim of antiquities that have been illegally removed from its territory”.

With this letter, they request the withdrawal of the bill which “insults the prestige of the Parliament and which smoothes the ground for the legalization of antiquities theft and illegal exports of antiquities”. In addition, Mr. Gerovasilis and Mr. Anagnostopoulou demand the submission to Parliament of all the documents on the basis of which the relevant agreement was made.
