From July 7 to August 31, 174 cases of influenza were reported – 35 were hospitalized and 2 of them were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit

Laboratory-confirmed influenza belongs to the diseases monitored through the Mandatory Disease Notification System (SYDN) of the EODY.

In total, from July 7 to August 31, 174 cases of influenza (86 laboratory-confirmed by PCR and 88 by antigen test) were declared through the SYDN.

One hundred seventy-two (172) cases belonged to type A and two (2) to type B. 25 type A samples were subtyped, of which 24 belonged to subtype A(H3N2) and 1 to subtype A(H1N1).

Of the 174 reported cases of influenza, 35 (20%) were hospitalized and 2 of them were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

The number of reported cases was almost five times higher than the number of cases reported in the same period in 2019 through the SYDN (37 cases of influenza), while no cases of influenza were reported in the period 2020-2021.

Of the reported flu cases, 160 were Greeks (92%) and 14 foreigners (8%) from nine countries, all from the Northern Hemisphere.

The median age of cases was 22 years (range: 1–75 years), while 10 cases were children aged ≤12 years. 58% of the cases were men.
