In 2021, Olympia as we knew it, unfortunately changed its face. The place where the spirit of the Olympic games and the reconciliation of peoples still lives, was faced with destruction. Thousands of olive trees, integral parts of this sacred place, were lost.
THE PPC within the framework of the corporate social responsibility program “PPC I act for the environment” and in collaboration with the non-profit foundation Arete Fund and government agencies, proceeded to donation of €450,000 for the purchase, storage and maintenance, in specially designed areas, of 80,000 olive seedlings, until they are given to the affected farmers, for the recovery of the area of Ancient Olympia. The recovery of nature but also of the local society that was also “hurt” by the disaster.
The choice of olive trees is not random. The olive tree is the symbol of our country and throughout the centuries a global symbol of peace, wisdom and prosperity. But it is also an important part of the productive wealth of the country, vital for thousands of our fellow citizens. With this move, PPC planted the seed that will bring life back to the place and with it, symbolically planted an olive tree in the square of Ancient Olympia to remind of its promise to the environment and to man. The promise that the olive tree would return to its place, Ancient Olympia, and never leave again.
“We are replanting the olive groves of Ancient Olympia and we hope that as the new trees grow in this historic site, hope will grow for the residents and prosperity will strengthen in the area».
