Two new museums in Thessaloniki for the 300,000 ancient finds of the metro

In 300,000 amount to foundings of the archaeological work brought to light by the construction of the Thessaloniki metro and because of which, the largest archaeological survey of an urban nature was carried out not only in the city, but also in the entire country, as pointed out by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, during today’s press conference , which was given together with the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Konstantinos-Achillea Karamanlis.

The archaeological work, which according to her has so far cost 169 million euros, has brought to the surface findings dating back to Hellenistic times and reflecting the timeless urban development of the urban fabric of the city, while part of them will be exhibited in two museums in Thessaloniki. “All the findings are valuable, but not all are exhibitable,” he pointed out.

According to the Minister of Culture and Sports, of the 13 stations of the main line of the Thessaloniki metro, antiquities were found in “Agia Sophia”, “Venizelou”, “Fountain”, the so-called Cross Over Fountain, the University, the station “Fleming” and the Train Station of Pylaia.

Especially for the Venizelos station, Mrs. Mendoni emphasized that “it is the largest archaeological site being created in the context of an international technical project. We don’t have anywhere else such an archaeological site” and announced, among other things, that the relocation of the antiquities at the Venizelos station is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2023.

The two museums

During the press conference, the Minister of Culture and Sports announced that the two museum spaces will be created one at the crossover, which will be located in front of the AUTH Library buildingbetween the “Fountain” and “University” stations and one in building A3 of the former camp of Pavlos Melaswithin the Metropolitan Park.

Regarding the museum space that will be formed in the crossover, he emphasized that it is a point with a length of 77 meters and a width of 10 and a useful space of 5,000 square meters, which is granted to the Ministry of Culture and Sports by Attiko Metro with the shell. According to Ms. Mendoni, the section of the Decumanus, 77 meters long, which was detached from the “Agia” station Sophia”. Asked about its construction schedule, she emphasized that as soon as the shell of this large building is delivered, the studies will proceed and clarified that up to six years are required for its completion.

Referring to the construction of a museum in building A3 of the former camp of Pavlos Melas, she clarified that it will “talk” about the history of the city and in it antiquities will be exhibited in the traditional way, either individually or in showcases. He pointed out that the museological study has been approved by the Central Council of Museums and the goal is to restore the building and create the museum, to be included in the NSRF 2021-2027.
