Astute people have found a new way to deceive unsuspecting citizens and extract sensitive personal data, financial information or even security codes through phone calls, according to complaints that have been made in the last period of time to the Electronic Crime Prosecution Directorate.
According to an announcement by ELAS, phone calls are made from landlines or mobile phones using a recorded message in English or Greek. The perpetrators, pretending to be police authorities, urge citizens to follow specific steps in order to be informed about criminal offenses allegedly pending against them.
For their safety, the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate recommends to citizens:
– Be careful with these types of phone calls.
– To keep the telephone number from which they have been called.
– Do not call back a number given to them via voicemail, be cautious.
– Not to talk to anyone who calls them and asks for sensitive information.
– Not to reveal their online banking passwords, card details or other sensitive information via email or phone.
– Not to give, under any circumstances, the “PIN” code of the credit or debit card or the access code of their bank account via e-banking.
