The cost of the provision, which is estimated to reach 111 million euros, will be entirely borne by the city of Berlin, while from January 1, as the federal government has announced, the introduction of a national travel measure is expected
The Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB) gave yesterday, Thursday, the “green light” for the introduction of the ticket of 29 euros per month for the period from October 1 to December 31 in the German capital.
The mayor Francisca Gifai said she was satisfied, but the criticism of the opposition concerns the possibility that repeat elections will be held soon in Berlin, due to irregularities found in the last meeting, in September 2021.
According to VBB, the ticket will be issued as a quarterly subscription and will cover travel by all means in zone AB, i.e. the entire urban network of Berlin, but not in zone C, which includes the suburbs and Brandenburg, of whose government showed no corresponding disposition.
The cost of the provision, which is estimated to reach 111 million euros, will be entirely borne by the city of Berlin, while from January 1, as the federal government has announced, the introduction of a national travel measure is expected.
“This is a transitional measure, between the €9/month ticket, which expired on August 31, and the national ticket, which will be introduced in the new year. Berlin offers and leads the way,” Ms Giffay said today, adding that her long-term goal remains a permanent, good public transport ticket offer, “with which Berliners can move anywhere in the city for no more than one euro a day day”. For example, a single trip on the Berlin subway currently costs 3 euros, while the monthly card with unlimited journeys is 86 euros and the annual card is 946 euros.
Federal Transport Minister Volker Vissing (FDP) appeared cautious about the measure, noting that he himself was “pursuing a different goal”, a single ticket, attractive to occasional drivers, who would be willing to try commuting by train or bus. At the state level, the head of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU), Oliver Friederici, told the Berliner Zeitung: “Ms Gifai just wants to stand out in case there are repeat elections in Berlin. This is only an election campaign of the SPD.”
