ELAS on the night incidents at AUTH and in the center of Thessaloniki: No chemicals were used

No chemicals were used in the area of the musical concert at AUTH, nor did her forces move against the people who were watching her, it is emphasized, among other things, in a statement by ELAS about the incidents that took place at night on the university campus and then in the city center. In total, four arrests were made for the incidents, while a 27-year-old man was arrested. The arrested person, who, according to the police, does not have student status, is being taken to the criminal prosecution prosecutor of Thessaloniki.

In detail, the Police announcement is as follows:

“Early morning hours today, Saturday September 17, 2022, a group of people with covered facial features, taking advantage of the presence of a gathered crowd during a musical event – concert in an outdoor area of ​​A.P.Th. (Grass of the School of Philosophy), was detached from it and moved suddenly launching a fierce attack by throwing objects (stones) against police forces who were near the building of the Department of Agriculture, to protect the construction of the Library”.

“The police forces, in order to repel the attack, repelled the attackers using appropriate means and tactics, who, in order to avoid arrest, integrated themselves into the people attending the event. The above-mentioned repulsion took place at a distance from the concert venue, while the police forces did not move against the people watching it and no chemicals were used by them in the concert venue.”

“Subsequently and during the departure of the crowd after the concert was interrupted, a group of people again threw objects (stones) at other police forces.”

“Next, about 1,000 people gathered near Kamara and stopped traffic on Egnatia Street by placing trash cans. Then, they moved towards the premises of the A.P.Th. throwing improvised incendiary devices (Molotov cocktails) and re-placed garbage cans on the road in order to obstruct the movement of the police forces, who together with the special water-throwing vehicle pushed them back. Afterwards, the aforementioned marched to the Ancient Agora Square from where they left in different directions.”

“A total of four (4) arrests were made and one arrest of a 27-year-old citizen (who does not have student status) for the crime of disturbing the peace, while trash cans and police equipment were damaged.”

“A preliminary investigation is being carried out by the State Security Sub-Directorate of the Thessaloniki Security Directorate”.

According to the case file, they are charged with the act of disturbing the peace.
