“Climate Change and Me”: A two-day event dedicated to environmental awareness at the SNFCC

From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Stavros Niarchos Park, from Xefoto and Pefkona to the Mediterranean Garden, the Dome, the Vegetable Garden, and the Perimetro, is filled with activities aimed at children and large and revolve around the questions “What is climate change?” and “What can I do about climate change?”.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) organizes on the last weekend of September (24 and 25/09) the first SNFCC Green Weekend, a two-day event dedicated to environmental awareness with the general title “Climate change and me”.

From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Stavros Niarchos Park, from Xefotos and Pefkonas to the Mediterranean Garden, the Dome, the Vegetable Garden, but also the Perimetro, is filled with activities aimed at young and old and revolving around the questions “What is climate change?” and “What can I do about climate change?”.

More specifically, on September 24, at 7:00 p.m. in the Dome of the SNFCC, there will be a speech by Constantinos Kartalis, professor at EKPA in the scientific area “Environmental and Climate Physics”, director of the Environmental Physics Laboratory of the Department of Physics and member of the European Union’s Scientific Committee for Climate Change, entitled “Knowing climate change and its challenges”. Konstantinos Kartalis, in dialogue with Ifigenia Taxopoulou, founding member and general secretary of the European theater network mitos21, scientific collaborator of the non-profit organization Julie’s Bicycle, will examine the issue of climate change by presenting what has already happened, explaining the current situation, why we are now talking about the climate crisis, how it manifests itself, what are the trends and practices worldwide to deal with it, what studies show about the effects of climate change in Greece, and, finally, what each of us can do to contribute positively to the management of the issue.

On September 25, at 19.00, at the Dome of the SNFCC, there will be a panel discussion moderated by Ifigenia Taxopoulou. Five speakers attempt to answer the question “What can I do about climate change?”, but also highlight initiatives to address the issue in the light of Green Architecture, Sustainable Mobility, Plastic Water Pollution, Overfishing, of Food, Climate Justice. Each of the five speakers who will participate – Lefteris Arapakis (co-founder and administrator of AMKE ENALEA), Gogo Delogianni (chef), ‘Agis Mourelatos (architect), Spyros Papageorgiou (Director of Development of the Cities for Bicycle Organization), Elita Fasoula (member of Fridays for Future Thessaloniki)- will focus on the presentation of the problem, the prevailing trends for its management and how each of us can actively contribute to tackling the climate crisis.

For these two open events there will be simultaneous interpretation in Greek sign language.

The two-day program is complemented by film screenings, educational workshops and visual activities for all ages, book readings for children, face painting, but also wider information for visitors through information booths of Non-Profit Organizations, agencies and programs, which put at the core of issues related to the two-day theme: ARKTOUROS, Cities for Bicycles, Greenpeace Greece, Fashion Revolution Greece, Healthy Seas, Natura 2000 Here We Live, WWF Greece (24 and 25/09, 10.00-14.00 & 17.00-19.00 at Pefkonas Stavros Niarchos Park).

In addition, in the Perimeter of the SNFCC, the Athens Photo World “Nature and Environment” photo exhibition with works by Reuters photographers will be presented from September 1st, which will last until September 30th.
