Police operation and arrests for the shootings in a Roma settlement in Diavata

The causes of the bloody incident that unfolded last Sunday afternoon in the Roma settlement “Agia Sophia” in Diavata, Thessaloniki, remain unknown so far, in which three people were injured, including an 8-year-old girl, fortunately only slightly.

So far, four people have been arrested for the incident, while the case is being investigated regularly.

According to a police statement, everything seems to have started when a five-member group opened fire with shotguns at the house where a 43-year-old man lives. Three people (aged 32, 24 and 21) have already been arrested from this group and two more (27 and 19 years old) are being sought.

Immediately after the shootings, strong police forces were called to the scene, while the EKAV took a seriously injured 40-year-old man (hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the groin), the minor (wounded on the forehead) and the 24-year-old from the arrested (with a gunshot wound weapon in the right hand), to whom first aid was administered.

On Monday morning, a large police operation followed in the settlement during which a fourth person was arrested for involvement in the incident. This is the 43-year-old owner of the house where the shots were fired. As it became known, 86 people and 71 vehicles were checked, while two shotguns with 16 cartridges, eleven cartridge concentrators and three shotgun cartridges were found in the houses of the persons involved.

In the context of the operation, the 43-year-old’s dog was found – moreover – fatally injured, an act for which the 24-year-old is allegedly accused (the prescribed administrative fine of 30,000 euros was also imposed), while he is also being prosecuted for grievous bodily harm with a victim of the 40-year-old who is being treated.
