Unbelievable and yet true… They have been living in their car since last February! – Read their shocking story

Where they have been approached about renting a house, the answers are negative, despite assurances that they will pay the rent

For almost half the year they live in a car, under the house they used to live in until they are evicted. Among their life, which is piled in seats and trunks, a 93-year-old man and his 50-year-old daughter sit, sleep and… live in two car seats, in a city, in Amaliada, and time passes for everyone, undisturbed by this picture.

“Not even in their worst nightmare…”

The 50-year-old Ms Stella Panagiotopoulou and her elderly father, Mr. Panagiotisa very kind person, an immigrant, who created a beautiful life by working despite the difficulties, they were left with only their belongings and the small “fiataki” that has become their “home” since the winter!

They spent a hot, scorching summer, “learning” during the day that in order not to “burn” they should change parking spaces around their old neighborhood on Sisini Street.

And winter is coming…

“The situation is indescribable. We could not imagine that we would experience something like this.

We have sent letters with the problem we are facing, me without a job for years and without a home, but nothing is being done.

In the Metropolis we addressed, we were told to go to the place that operates in Spata, but we cannot go. I would like to work, find a house and not be somewhere doing nothing. Going to an institution is not a solution.

We also addressed the municipality and the Ombudsman and social services, but nothing has been done.

To be able to rent a house in Amaliada, to know that my father is safe, so that I can also find work outside the city.

Now there is nothing. Only the debts, a car that has become a house and our possessions in the car and in a warehouse…”, he confesses, speaking to the eff. “Patris of Kyriaki” Mrs. St. Panagiotopoulou.

“What we live in is not human…”

He says with a complaint: “Already, we have been forgotten…” and continues with a complaint: “The whole world is passing by, looking at us with sadness. It’s the worst thing for us. About 10 years unemployed. I have graduated in Accounting and I have also graduated in Information Technology. I did various jobs, but now we have nothing.”

In recent years, they have been living off Mr. Panagiotis’ pension, which has been reduced by 3,000 euros for years, to 5,800 euros a year, with their debts piling up.

Where they have applied to rent a house, the answers are negative, despite assurances that they will pay the rent.

They live in their car

“I want homeowners to trust me. We are people who had worked, had property and at some point everything went against us, as happens to many people. We will not fool anyone.

“A job and a house to rent. It is not human what we live. It’s not fair for my father…”, he characteristically tells us.

“Where is the humanity, the solidarity?”

“We came as immigrants and built the Kertizeika settlement in Douneika. We worked, we struggled, we fought, but we succeeded honestly, and we made our families.

That’s not fair. Where is the humanity, the solidarity, the principles?…”, added Mr. Panagiotis.
