Bad weather “Bogdan”: Schools in Corfu are closed for precautionary reasons

By decision of the Deputy Governor of Corfu, Costas Zorbas, following the emergency bulletin of worsening weather issued by the National Meteorological Service EMY /EMK and sent through the General Secretariat of Civil Protection – schools of all grades will not operate

Schools of all grades in Corfu will remain closed for precautionary reasons due to the upcoming bad weather Bogdan.

The services of the Regional Unit of Corfu, which are involved in projects and actions to deal with risks due to the deterioration of the weather, are placed in a state of increased Civil Protection readiness from today, Monday, September 26, 2022, and for the entire duration of tomorrow (Tuesday, September 27, 2022). which affects Italy and heads towards Greece.

Therefore, by the decision of the Deputy Governor of Corfu, Costas Zorbas – and after the Civil Protection Coordinating Body of the Regional Unit of Corfu was completed, which was convened as an emergency after the emergency weather report issued by the National Meteorological Service EMY /EMK and sent via of the General Secretariat of Civil Protection – schools of all levels (kindergartens, elementary, high schools, high schools, special schools) in the Regional Unit of Corfu will not operate for precautionary reasons.

In particular, according to the emergency worsening weather bulletin, on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, the following will be affected with heavy rains and storms accompanied by a large number of lightning, localized hail and very strong winds:

A. the Northern Ionian Sea and Epirus (from dawn to dusk) and

B. the Western Continent and possibly the Northwest Peloponnese (from midday to evening hours).

The decision of the Deputy Regional Governor P.E. Corfu, Costa Zorba is as follows:

a) To take the necessary measures and within the framework of their responsibilities by the involved services, in accordance with the relevant circulars of the G.G.P.P. and the planning of services, to deal with emergency needs.

b) The interruption of classes on Tuesday, October 27, 2022, due to the extraordinary weather phenomena, in all school units of both Primary Education (Kindergartens – Elementary Schools) and Secondary Education (High Schools – High Schools) throughout the Territory of the Regional Corfu Unit.

c) For the information (through the media) of the citizens, in order to avoid unpleasant situations and to protect the safety of the citizens.

The Department of Civil Protection P.E. Corfu recommends to citizens:

• Do not ignore the instructions of the General Secretariat of Civil Protection, the Weather Bulletins of the E.M.Y. and the instructions of the local Authorities, such as the Traffic, the Coast Guard, the Fire Brigade, etc.

• To change the program of their movements, so that they do not coincide with the peak of weather phenomena and to avoid non-urgent movements.

• Secure items that may be blown away by wind or heavy rain and may cause damage or injury.

• Fix any billboards they may have posted.

• Secure the doors and windows of their homes or workplaces.

• Avoid activities in marine and coastal areas.

• Do not hold electrical devices or the telephone, because the lightning can pass through the cables. Disconnect the television sets from the antenna and the power supply.

• Avoid touching plumbing pipes (kitchen, bathroom), as they are good conductors of electricity.

• Avoid passing under large trees, under posted signs and in general through areas where light objects (e.g. pots, broken glass, etc.) can become detached and fall to the ground (e.g. under balconies) .

• Be regularly informed about the weather and the condition of the road network.

• Avoid crossings with streams.

• Avoid parking vehicles under trees, etc

• Stop their car on the side of the road and away from trees that might fall on it during a storm. Stay in the car and turn on the stop warning lights (emergency lights).

• Never take shelter under a tall tree in an open area.

• Make sure that the wells outside the houses are not blocked and the gutters are working properly.

• Avoid working in underground spaces.

• Do not approach areas where landslides have occurred.
