Who was Saint Aquilina?

Saint Aquilina was born in the year 1745 AD. in Zagliveri, Thessaloniki. Her house is preserved to this day, although not in good condition.

One day Aquilina’s father quarreled with a Turk and in his anger stabbed the Turk and left him dead. The whole village was disturbed and all the Christians were frightened and ran to hide to escape the fury of the Turks for revenge. George is sentenced to death, the Turks will hang him. But if he wants to save his life, there is a solution, he just needs to turn to Turkey. Giorgis cowards to the gallows, betrays his faith and promises to slowly turn his family into Turks.

When the Christians heard it, they were medicated. But those who were medicated the most were his wife and Aquilina.

Unjustly, his good wife tries to make him come to his senses, to repent, to confess. He, blinded by the gifts, does not even want to hear about the Name of Christ.

So Aquilina is now the only consolation of the Mother, and she tries to raise her as well as possible in a Christian way, as if she sensed that she would follow the path of Martyrdom.

The efforts to make Akylina Turkish

In the year 1764 AD George is ordered by the pasha who was the governor of Thessaloniki to convince his daughter to become a Turkala, because his son saw her in the fountain and was dazzled by her beauty and wants her as his wife. George was happy for this great honor, and he runs to his house to tell her the great news and his eyes were shining because of what the pasha ordered him. Aquilina froze. Mother and daughter throw him out of the house and they don’t want to listen to him either. But the “Turk” does not give in easily. He rages, at first with sweet words and promises, but when he sees Aquilina remaining unmoved by all this, he changes his tactics and orders torture.

The martyrdom of the Saint and her end

They strip her, beat her, whip her with rods and wire ropes. Her whole body becomes a wound. Her blood is poured into a river and paints the Macedonian land of Zagliverius. Aquilina has her eyes on the Sky and tries to repeat:

“I am a Christian and I will die a Christian.”

They tortured her for three days. On the third day in the afternoon, in pain and bleeding, she is brought home. Her Mother hugs her as soon as she sees her and all she cares to ask is:

“My child, did you become a coward and deny Christ?”

Aquilina tries with difficulty to answer:

“Mother I did as you told me. The diamond you entrusted to me I kept clean and undefiled and now I go to Christ and my God”.

It was September 27, 1764 when her Holy soul departed.

An indescribable Heavenly fragrance poured out from her Holy Relic and all the streets where they passed it were fragrant for many days.

The Turks, in order to consider her theirs even after death, ordered her to be buried in the Turkish cemetery, next to the village square.

That same night a light descended upon her grave like a star and remained for many hours.

Then three Orthodox Living Christians, Groomsmen of Christ took an oath of secrecy and stole the body of the Saint.

Her memory is commemorated on September 27.
