With the sentence of life imprisonment, the Mixed Jury of Thessaloniki punished a 59-year-old man who shot a 45-year-old man in cold blood with a shotgun and then doused his lifeless body in gasoline and burned it to erase the traces of the crime.
The brutal murder was committed last June in Kallithea, outside Katerini, with the perpetrator confessing to his heinous act and attributing it to revenge, as he believed that the victim had handed him over to the police a few years earlier for 21 cannabis plants.
The Court unanimously found him guilty of premeditated homicide in a calm state of mind, illegal carrying of weapons and use of weapons, without recognition of mitigating factors, while rejecting the request of the defense to be judged with a reduced charge, due to the influence of drugs and alcohol, which he allegedly consumed.
“I would do the same again…”
In his apology, the 60-year-old on the one hand apologized to the victim’s family, for whom he said he had him as his “little brother”, but on the other hand he appeared unrepentant for his act, characteristically saying that if he could go back in time “I would do the same again […] and for one reason, because I was giving him free drugs, good quality.” He coldly described the manner of the murder, citing characteristics:
“I put the carbine in my mouth, I told him it won’t hurt, I pulled the trigger and then I fired.” “At that moment I could not see anything, I burned with him. I can’t fathom it,” he added.
The crime was revealed when passers-by spotted the charred corpse of the unfortunate man behind the Kallithea cemeteries and in a pool of blood. The investigation of the Katerin Security Sub-Directorate revealed that the 59-year-old beat and tied the 45-year-old with a nylon rope and then took him in his car to the cemeteries, where he shot him in the head with a shotgun.
He then doused his lifeless body in gasoline and set it on fire. According to the coroner’s investigation, the head injury was the cause of his death.
