Crete: Savage beating of a police officer by four men

Attack by four people accepted by a police officer in Crete. Everything happened at a car repair shop in Neapoli, where the policeman was found. The owner of the workshop had a heated argument with a man who was also in the area, who is a livestock farmer from the wider area.

The police officer, in his attempt to calm the spirits and prevent the situation from “getting out of hand”, announced his identity and called the breeder to calm down. Instead, the man became enraged and left the workshop, only to return a short time later with three other people.

The four assaulted the police officer, hitting him and throwing him to the ground.

The police officer, who serves in Ierapetra, is hospitalized, with head injuries.

For the attack three people have been arrested.

In detail, the announcement of the Union of Police Officers of Lasithi states:

“We condemn the cowardly, brazen and unprovoked attack against our colleague which took place today 09/28/2022 in Neapoli Lasithiou.

“The colleague had gone to a local workshop with his Service motorcycle in order to carry out the necessary maintenance work, when he was initially verbally attacked by a breeder who complained about the parking spaces in front of the workshop. The colleague, after stating his status, tried to calm him down but to no avail. Afterwards, the breeder called his family who immediately came to the scene and without starting a dialogue attacked the policeman, hitting him with their hands and feet, while at the same time threatening and abusing him. The colleague has injuries on his face and in his body, while fortunately his life is not in danger since forces of the AT Neapolis and AT Agios Nikolaos arrived immediately and arrested three (3) of the four (4) perpetrators.

“The delinquent behaviors of some breeders who ravage our land do not dampen our morale nor can they cause fear for our work. The impunity of certain social groups who remain unrepentant of their actions makes us stubborn and we continue stronger. We declare that we will stand against those who want an unprotected society without security and the rule of law. We will also support the colleague and the victim of the attack in any criminal proceedings until the perpetrators are punished. We wish the combatant colleague a good and speedy recovery and that he soon returns to his duties.”
