The “floating state” with its 6,000-person crew, sailed to the K-14 pier where it will remain for 4 days until October 10.

At Souda docked today, Thursday, October 6, the US Navy’s (USN’s) largest and newest aircraft carrier, the USS “George HW Bush”, with some Americans jokingly calling it “100,000 tons of diplomacy”. The imposing aircraft carrier was accompanied to Souda by the “Adria frigate”.

The “floating state” with 6,000 crew members, sailed to pier K-14 where it will remain for 4 days until October 10.

USS George Bus is the 10th and final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier built in 2009 and named after George Bush Sr., the 41st US president who was a fighter pilot in World War II.

With a crew of 3,500 people and an additional 2,500 for aviation, a length of almost 333 meters, and a displacement of 100,000 tons, it is from the largest aircraft carriers in the world.

USS George HW Bush (CVN-77) is home to more than 85 F/A-18C Hornet, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler, E-2C Hawkeye radar and HH-60H helicopters .

It can and does develop a speed of 30 knots thanks to them two nuclear reactors which has the ability to operate continuously for 20 years without refueling.

The George Bush had come to Chania in February 2017 where it had stayed for a few days for the recreation of the crew. Shortly before 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, the boarding of the crew started on the buses, to be transported to the city of Chania.
