Monkey pox: 82 confirmed cases in Greece

Two new cases of monkeypox have been reported in the last week in our country, with the total number of cases recorded in Greece amounting to 82, according to the weekly epidemiological surveillance report of EODY.

They are all men, median age: 37 years (19-61), of which 23 reported traveling abroad during the incubation period of the disease (28%).

The data presented in this report concern the laboratory-confirmed cases of monkeypox virus infection in Greece, based on the data declared to EODY and have been recorded until October 6, 2022. These patients have recovered or are recovering in a generally good clinical condition, the EODY emphasizes in its announcement.

The temporal distribution of laboratory-confirmed cases by week of onset of symptoms (ISO week) is shown in the Graph below.

EODY notes that monkeypox is a viral infection first recognized in 1958. Since then, it has been occurring in tropical regions of West and Central Africa. It is transmitted through contact with wild animals and from human to human through close physical contact.
